United States national amateur champion for 2012 Santos Vasquez of Reno, Nev., headlines a professional boxing card presented by Pochiro Boxing Promotions, “Throwdown at Sam’s Town—Round 1,” Friday, Dec. 6, at Sam’s Town Hotel & Gambling Hall in Las Vegas, Nev.
The 22-year-old Vasquez faces 23-year-old Yosigey Ramirez of Las Vegas in a four-round strawweight bout.
Leon Spinks III had been scheduled to fight, but the bout is postponed after his original opponent withdrew and there was not adequate time to find a suitable opponent.
This is the second boxing card for burgeoning Pochiro Boxing Promotions of Las Vegas, and the first at a Boyd Gaming property. Pochiro Boxing Promotions held its inaugural card during August at a non-gaming facility. Its success paved the way for even bigger and better cards.
“We were delighted and enthused by our first card, and Sam’s Town recognized what we achieved and what we will be doing,” said Pete Pochiro, CEO of Pochiro Boxing Promotions.
“We believe we’re filling a much-needed niche in Southern Nevada,” said Pochiro. “We are confident Las Vegas boxing fans want and will support exciting cards that are reasonably priced,” said Pochiro. “Of course, we are not presenting 12-round, world championship fights, but then, we aren’t charging $500. We aren’t even charging $75.
“We’re presenting youngsters who throw down because they’re anxious to move up in the sport,” said Pochiro. “These are the kind of fighters and bouts that make any card attractive. As fight fans know, most of the time the best fights on a championship card are the preliminary bouts. That’s what we’re offering, action and entertainment, and we’re making it cost-effective.”
Other bouts include:
Antton Slaughter (4-1-1, 1 KO) of Columbus, Ohio, against Jesse Carradine (8-2-1, 4 KOs) of Las Vegas in a six-round super featherweight bout;
Bronson Stultz (1-0, 1 KO) of Henderson, Nev., against Wilberth Lopez (1-2, 1 KO) of Tucson, Ariz., in a four-round welterweight bout;
