British Lightweight Champion, Martin Gethin, has secured an IBF World Title Final Eliminator clash with Panama’s Ameth Diaz.
The Walsall boxer, nicknamed ‘The Quiet Man’, will face the hard-hitting South American in his hometown on Friday, 31st May 2013. The Frank Warren show ‘Ready To Silence The World’ – in association with NEWOB Promotions – will take place at Walsall Town Hall and is live and exclusive on BoxNation (Sky Ch. 437/Virgin Ch. 546).
“This is a massive opportunity for me,” the 29 year-old told www.uko-boxing.com. “I won the British Title in January and now I’m one step away from a shot at the IBF crown. It’s a dream come true.
“I’d like to thank Frank Warren for all his hard work in getting me this fight in my hometown and my manager and trainer, Errol Johnson, for all his support. I won’t let anybody down.
“He’s coming into my backyard and I’ll show him what I’m all about. The Quiet Man is going to silence the world.”
Diaz (31-11) was set to face Mexican Marvin Quintero for a chance to meet current champion, Miguel Vazquez, last week but Quintero withdrew after a broken nose required surgery.
Thanks to Gethin (24-3-1) winning the IBF International belt, by defeating Carl Johanesson back in September, he is the next available contender in the IBF’s rankings for the Eliminator. The Gethin-Diaz winner will become the mandatory challenger for Vazquez and a shot at the IBF title.
“I’m delighted for Martin,” added Frank Warren’s Matchmaker, Dean Powell. “He’s the British Champion and has a World ranking and this is his time.
“I know the whole of Walsall, the Black Country, and England will be behind him. He’s a quiet, unassuming guy out of the ring but in it, he’s a warrior. He deserves this chance and that’s why we’ve worked so hard to get it.”
‘Ready To Silence The World’ features another Walsall fighter ready to make an impact on the International stage.
Midlands Area Cruiserweight Champion, Chris Keane (9-0), is also on teh bill and will take on an International opponent over ten rounds. Keane, a former ABA Champion, is making waves in the Cruiserweight division and is ready to make the step up.
The packed show also features a host of Black Country boxers.
Former British Welterweight Title Challenger, Jason Welborn (11-2) will be in action for the first time since his defeat to Frankie Gavin back in January whilst undefeated Staffordshire super middleweight, Grant Cunningham (7-0), will also make an appearance. Upcoming Manchester prospect Ronnie Heffron (11-1) is back in action following his recent Commonwealth Title defeat at the fists of Denton Vassell.
Two local boxers, West Bromwich welterweight Tom Stokes and Wolverhampon super featherweight Dezzie Bowater, will be making their professional debuts on what is sure to be a defining night for the Black Country and Britain.
Tickets for ‘Ready To Silence The World’ are priced at £40 and £75 and are available from Walsall Town Hall Box Office on 0845 111 2900.
