Manny Zaber vs. Kristian Laight on Saturday

Manny Zaber is hoping to send a message to Les Byfield when he takes on Kristian Laight on Black Country Boxing’s ‘High Stakes’ show at Walsall Town Hall, sponsored by Grosvenor Casino Walsall, this weekend writes James Eley.

The Old Hill lightweight is adamant he won’t be taking journeyman Laight lightly but is pursuing a showdown with Dudley boxer Byfield and is frustrated that the fight hasn’t been made already.

“There is no way that I would look past Kristian Laight but everyone knows I want the Byfield fight,” he told www.uko-boxing.com. “Kristian got the win in his last fight when he wasn’t expected to so it shows that anything can happen.

“I have a lot of respect for journeymen fighters like him. They fight every week and I don’t think I would be able to do what they do. Getting in there every week with anybody and traveling around fighting everywhere, it is tough and you never know what will happen in the ring. I am taking him fully seriously. He will be full of confidence after winning his last fight and I know I will have to be on the top of my game. I will turn up and do what I do.

“That said, I want to put a message out and put a show on to make a statement. Les Byfield is now talking about retiring. He is not giving the fight that everyone wants to the fans. I am not sure why he is against giving people what they want to see. Everyone wants to see us in the ring so I just don’t understand why it hasn’t happened yet. I am hoping it will happen at the end of the year, if he wants it then I am here and waiting.”

The devout Muslim has recently been celebrating Eid with his family but he has made sacrifices to make sure he is keeping up with his strict diet ahead of tonight’s showdown.

“It was Eid last week so I spent time with my family. I couldn’t eat what I want because I need to be in my best shape for this fight but that is okay and my preparation has been great for the fight. I’m feeling good and I am ready to get the win.”
