MGM’s very own Matthew Macklin is back in the ring this weekend at the Barclaycard Arena in Birmingham. Matthew will be taking on Jason Welbourn on the undercard of Sam Eggington ́s British welterweight title defence against Dale Evans. This is his first fight since stopping Chris Herrmann in less than two minutes in August and his second fight in a three-fight-plan to get another shot at a world title next year.
For the first time in nine-years Matthew will be fighting at light-middleweight. The last time he was fighting at 154lbs was for his battle against Jamie Moore in 2006. He is however confident that this is the weight he needs to be at going forward. “I feel like I have got a new lease of life, I know I ́ve got to be at my best on Saturday, but I am going to win this one; I have to.”
The night following the pro show will be the annual MGM White Collar event which raises money for local charity Aspandem.
For Macklin though, it is more than just another fight, this is the start of his next world title attempt.
“From a personal and individual point of view this fight is the first of a three fight plan between now and Christmas,” he said “which will give me really good momentum and leave me sitting in a good position going into next year where I’ll be looking for another world title shot at either 160lbs (Middleweight) or 154lbs (Light-Middleweight).”
It is going to be a great night, not to be missed.
