One of the most anticipated matchups in South African boxing for many years is the fight between the youthful and explosive unbeaten Kevin Lerena (9-0, 6 KOs) and the tough as teak and highly durable Daniel “Billy the Kid” Bruwer (24-5-1, 21 KOs).
They will fight for the vacant World Boxing Federation (WBF) Intercontinental Cruiserweight on June 6 in Tshwane, South Africa under the promotional banner of Real Steel Promotions.
Lerena at 22 years of age is a novice in comparison to the experienced Bruwer, but what he brings to the table is explosive power in both hands together with the exuberance of youth. Bruwer on the other hand at 29 is a seasoned campaigner having been in with some tough customers, including WBF World Cruiserweight champion Danie Venter.
Bruwer, the reigning WBF International Champion, has the heart of a lion and while he seems to take too much punishment, his grit and determination have seen him build up a highly impressive record. Bruwer has only been stopped once in his career.
Has Lerena, who captured the WBF Africa title last September, got the skills and power to hurt Bruwer, or will the in-your-face Bruwer simply be too experienced for young Lerena.
Whatever the outcome is, this fight promises to be a bloody war with neither man wanting to take a backward step. This could well be one of the fights of the year in South Africa, and will be supervised by WBF Honorary President Dr Mathews Phosa.
