SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO- Focused on their fights, Juan Manuel “Juanma” Lopez and Jonathan “Polvo” Oquendo showed today how they are training to face Francisco Vargas and Abner Mares, respectively, on July 12, as part of the show headlined by Saul “Canelo” Alvarez against Erislandy Lara to be held at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, in a Golden Boy Promotions (GBP) presentation, broadcasted on Showtime Pay Per View.
Lopez (34-3, 31 KOs), who reigned as WBO superbantamweight and featherweight champion, will defend his WBO International junior lightweight title versus Vargas (19-0-1, 13 KOs), the #2 ranked by the WBO, #9 by the IBF, #10 by the WBC and #14 by the WBA at 130 pounds division. Lopez is the WBO’s #4 ranked in the junior lightweights.
“Thank God everything is well in training. We are working hard, focused on this fight and the weight makes us comfortable”, Lopez said. “We are working for Vargas, who is our opponent, a fighter who throws a lot and we have to prepare for that. We’re not going for the knockout, but if it, welcome”.
Lopez, who is training with Freddy Trinidad at the Caimito Boxing Gym in San Juan, came off a spectacular TKO win over Daniel Ponce de Leon last March 15 in Bayamon, Puerto Rico.
“We have not stopped training since the fight against Ponce de Leon. After that fight I took a short week outside the boxing gym, but we continue to work on physical part, running, and I feel strong and eating well”, added Lopez.
Meanwhile, Oquendo (24-3, 16 KOs) will fight against former world bantamweight, super bantamweight and featherweight champion Mares (26-1-1, 14 KOs) in a 10 rounds scheduled bout.
“I’ve always wanted a great opportunity and this opportunity came against Mares, who is a good fighter and in a great moment for me”, Oquendo said. “After my fight last March, I thought something good would come and thank to Golden Boy Promotions and PRBBP I get this co-feature bout on a great show”.
Oquendo worked today in the gym with his trainer Dennis Pantojas. Last March 14, 2014, Oquendo beat Mexican Guillermo Avila by unanimous decision in Kissimmee, Florida. In that fight Avila visited the floor after was shot by a hard left hook from Oquendo.
“After the fight against Avila, I still working in the gym, we had a week off and returned to keep the condition, so we’re in good shape”, Oquendo said. “I know well to Abner Mares, when Golden Boy signed him, I was also with them and they had the intention that we faced sometime in another Mexico-Puerto Rico clash, and now comes this fight”.
