Back in May, Johnny Garton not only secured the English Welterweight Title. But also produced one of the contenders for Knockout of the year. “The Pexican” Garton 29 slipping the right hand of his then foe Ryan Fields. Countered with a left hook that many of us have only dreamed of.
That single shot alone ended the fight with Field’s unconscious before he hit the ground.
But 4 months on. 17th September in an aptly named show “LETHAL COMBINATION” Garton will now defend his title against a former English Champion in Tyler Goodjohn 25. In a fight that has all the ingredients for a small hall classic. Garton says “Tyler is a good boxer but also a great fighter. Who likes to have a tear up, he is a proper fighting man and thats exactly what I want”
Garton continues “I don’t want easy defences, I want fights that excite me and this excites me!”
The pair was due to clash for the vacant title back in May. But Goodjohn have to withdraw due to a spiral fracture of the hand. So in stepped Fields as a replacement.
“Me and Tyler were suppose to fight for the title so I saw it was right that my first defence should be against him. Its going to be such a good fight” proclaims Garton
Goodjohn a regular on Matchroom boxing shows. Has not only held the English title, but also showed his pedigree in challenging for the WBC International Super Lightweight Title.
“Its a step up in weight but I was killing myself to make Super Lightweight. I am so happy to get another shot and I am happy its against Garton” said Goodjohn.
He continued “I know our styles will mix and it will be a fantastic contest. I was gutted when I had to withdraw from the first fight. I am just happy that we can now get it on. I feel much better and stronger at Welterweight”
Back in April Goodjohn was preparing for his biggest night at Welterweight. He had earned himself a shot at the vacant English title and across the ring from him would of been Johnny Garton.
But during training camp Goodjohn 25 sustained a devastating spiral fracture of the hand. This subsequently meant that he had to withdraw from the above mentioned contest. Devastation, frustration, and anger, are just some of the emotions that Goodjohn experienced.
The thoughts of another English title had faded, and only questions remained.
Will I ever get another shot? Do I really want to go through this heartache again?.
Well things change pretty quick in boxing. Fast forward 3 months. Goodjohn is back in the gym, complete with baby Orlah the newest addition to the Goodjohn family. The goal is September 17th where Tyler will get another chance to hold an English title once again. His foe will be the before mentioned Garton in a clash that has the boxing world perched on the edge of their seats.
The Goodwin Boxing show in association with Olivia Goodwin promises to kick start the new boxing season with a bang. Garton vs Goodjohn is a fight truly worthy of the main event tag, not surprising tickets are already selling fast. With both Garton & Goodjohn having huge followings.
