DORADO, PUERTO RICO- World Boxing Organization (WBO) junior lightweight champion, Roman “Rocky” Martinez is in an intense training for his third title defense against former WBO featherweight champion Miguel Angel “Mikey” Garcia to be held on November 9 at the American Bank Center in Corpus Christi, Texas, in a Top Rank presentation to be broadcasted on HBO.
The Puerto Rican Martinez (27-1-2, 16 KOs) showed great stamina today when after his floor exercises starting his training, he worked four rounds of pads with trainer Freddie Trinidad, then four rounds with the punching bag and four rounds in the speed bag, ending his work with exercises for his neck, jaw and sit ups.
“This training camp have been very hard. Now, we are in the hardest stage but I feel good because I’m a boxer who is always training”, Martinez said before started his work and when he weighed in 147 pounds with the training clothes. “I’m comfortable in the weight and with my meals. We are working good ending my sessions in 138 or 139 pounds”.
Martinez, who come off a win over Diego Magdaleno on April in China, is happy also with his sparring sessions. As sparring partners, Martinez is working with world contender Luis “El Artesano” Cruz and prospect Miguel Marrero.
“We are working so good with my sparrings Luis Cruz and Miguel Marrero, and we are looking another boxer with the style like Mikey Garcia for the final weeks”, Martinez said.
About Mikey Garcia (32-0, 27 KOs), the unbeaten former WBO featherweight champion and actually ranked #1 by the WBO in the junior lightweight division, Martinez said that “Mikey Garcia is a great boxer, a young fighter who box and is a good puncher, but we are working for his style. We are making our work to face Mikey Garcia”.
