The opening bell will ring today for the 2016 Hall of Fame Induction Weekend. A huge gathering of boxing stars of yesterday and today will assemble to participate in festivities in Canastota.
Parade of Champions Set For Sunday, June 12th
“The Hall of Fame Weekend is boxing’s highlight weekend of the year. In Canastota, boxing fans can mingle with an incredible roster of boxing stars and celebrate the great sport,” said Hall of Fame director Edward Brophy. “The Hall of Fame Weekend is for anyone who loves the sport of boxing and we are very excited about honoring the Class of 2016.”
The four-day celebration will begin with the official ringing of the opening bell at 1 p.m. today on the Hall of Fame grounds. The weekend will also feature many events including ringside lectures, banquet, golf tournament, 5K Race / Fun Run, the Parade of Champions and the Official Induction Ceremony on Sunday, June 12th at 2:30 p.m.
Living inductees to attend include Mexico’s two-division champion Lupe Pintor,Panama’s two-division champion Hilario Zapata, judge Harold Lederman, commissioner Marc Ratner, journalist Jerry Izenberg and broadcaster Col. Bob Sheridan.
The Induction Ceremony will also honor posthumous inductees multi-division world champion Hector “Macho” Camacho in the Modern category: Petey Sarron in the Old-Timer category and Whitey Esneault in the Non-Participant category.
“The Village of Canastota and the Hall of Fame organization looks forward to welcoming boxing fans from around the world for the 27th Annual Hall of Fame Weekend,’” said Brophy.
An impressive list of over 40 boxing greats from the United States and abroad are scheduled to participate in weekend festivities June 9-12th including Marvelous Marvin Hagler, Sugar Ray Leonard, Pernell Whitaker, Pipino Cuevas, Michael Spinks, Leon Spinks, “Irish” Micky Ward, Andrew Golota, Christy Martin, Gerry Cooney, and many more.
Grand marshal of the Parade of Champions, scheduled for 1 p.m. on Sunday, June 12th, is Quentin Hillsman, head coach of the Syracuse University women’s basketball team.
