Former NABA Cruiserweight champ, Denton Daley, is returning to the ring to face the man some have dubbed “The Romanian Wrecking Machine” Giulian Ilie.
Ilie will step through the ropes for the first time ever in North American on Saturday August 29th, 2015 to square off against “The Canadian Sensation” for United Promotions Biggest Fight of the Summer, when they stage another incredible night of boxing action at the legendary Hershey Center in Mississauga, Ontario.
Earlier this week, Giulian Ilie sat down with Kocosports’ own “Fighting Irish” Gerry O’Neill to answer a few questions and tell us how things are going as he prepares to make his North American debut.
KS: Giulian thank you for taking the time to chat with us, August 29th in Mississauga is going to be your first time fighting professionally in North America which is a big deal for any fighter, are there any nerves, and does it have any effect on you going up against a Canadian opponent in his hometown?
GI: The fans allegiance’s will have no effect on me, I am used to fighting outside my own country. I will not be shaken, nor will I be intimidated. When I defeated Cristian Dolzanelli, taking his IBF International Cruiserweight title from him, I did it in front of all his fellow countrymen. Canada will be no different.
KS: For fans here who may not be familiar with you, can you tell them, what sort of fight they can expect?
GI: Daley is an explosive fighter, he is very aggressive, but I am more than prepared for that. I know the fans may want to see him explode and push forward as he has done to others, however, I am a smart, well trained, technical boxer. What they will see is a smart, tactical fight. I will exploit his weaknesses, look for my opening and when I find it, I will connect and he will feel it.
KS: You already have an impressive 21 wins under your belt, but your last few fights have been somewhat rougher on you, can you tell us what the biggest lessons you have taken away from those last few fights are?
GI: You bring up those few fights, but they were all taken at short notice. I do not turn down fights, I accept all challenges in my path! However, in the last few fights, they gave me very little time for preparation. With this fight it is much different, I have had plenty of time to prepare, to work hard and be in optimal condition. The outcome this time will be much different.
KS: All of your previous fights have been against European opponents, what is your opinion of the current crop of Cruiserweights in North America, and how do you feel they compare to the European fighters?
GI: The division is dominated by Russian fighters and Polish as well, but I have sparred many times with North American fighters while I was training in Germany. I don’t think the styles matter to me, I can adapt to both. Styles make fights, and I am ready to do whatever is needed in order to return home victorious over Denton Daley.
KS: You are certainly confident, you mentioned your training in Germany, do you think the training regimes are tougher for European fighters?
GI: My trainer travels to the US often. He tells me that the training is similar, however, in North America it can be easier. In Romania, the conditions are often harsher, we don’t always have the opportunity to utilize all these modern training tools, so we must be stronger, tougher. This time, as I said, I have had more opportunity to plan and to train. I have had very tough opponents in my last fights, I fought an Olympic champion in Moscow. I know I am fully prepared.
KS: Your opponent on August 29th in Mississauga, Denton Daley, who is now 13 – 1, and coming fresh of a win over Walter “Pájaro” Cabral, is from a fan perspective, the favorite going into this fight. What kind of a challenge do you think Daley presents and what is your biggest advantage?
GI: Daley is young, he is hungry and he is considered the favorite by the Canadians yes, but the truth is, I traveled to other countries for big fights before, and they always consider their local hero to be the favorite. All that does is makes me better. I can relax, I don’t cave-in to pressure, the pressure is all on Denton Daley. He is under pressure, I am relaxed, calm and focused, I can be tactical and calculated, while the pressure mounts on him.
KS: I know your focus right now is on Daley, August 29th in Mississauga, but could you give us your “hit list” of North American fighters in the division right now you would most like to face?
GI: Yes I am confident and of course there are other fighters I wish to defeat, but I will not overlook Denton Daley. Unfortunately for him he is the focus of all my energy and training right now. I am not just tactical in my fights, but in my career overall. I will take my opponents down one at a time, my goal is to be fighting for a title by spring.
KS: So then, my final question to you today, do you have any words for Denton Daley and his fans ahead of your showdown on August 29th in Mississauga?
GI: Denton, knowing you are going to face me, I feel I need wish you the best of luck. I would encourage Denton’s fans to buy their tickets now, you will see a great fight and the best man will win this fight. I have every intention of being that man.
KS: Kocosports will be there ringside as always to cover the fight, Giulian thank you very much for your time.
GI: That is good, you will be at ringside, I will give you a winning interview with me after my victory!
