INDIO, CA (June 12, 2013) – Rated one of the top welterweight boxers in the world, “Vicious” Victor Ortiz is known both for his aggressive two-fisted power as well as for his boyish charm. He will greet fans at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio, Calif. prior to the FOX Sports Networks and FOX Deportes televised doubleheader featuring East LA’s Frankie “Pitbull” Gomez facing former World Champion DeMarcus “Chop Chop” Corley and co-featuring local star Randy Caballero of Coachella against Puerto Rico’s Miguel Robles.
Ortiz began his pro career in impressive fashion and by 2008 was named by ESPN.com as the top boxing prospect of the year. Three years later, in April 2011, Ortiz fulfilled those expectations and claimed the WBC Welterweight World Championship with a unanimous decision win over then World Champion Andre Berto. Five months after capturing the title, Ortiz lost it to pound-for-pound king Floyd “Money” Mayweather.
A mix of talent and strong mentorship helped steer Ortiz to success early on. Raised in poverty, Ortiz took to boxing as a way to please his alcoholic father and defend himself against school bullies. Later orphaned when both his parents left home, Ortiz was left to fend for himself while taking care of his younger brother. Taken under the wing of several retired pro fighters, Ortiz eventually turned professional in search of a better financial life. “I appreciate everything that’s been done for me. After a difficult start, I’ve just followed my dreams.”
The boxer has proven to be a natural in front of the camera too as in the spring of 2013, he competed in the 16th season of ABC’s Dancing with the Stars and lasted several weeks before he and his partner, Lindsay Arnold, were knocked off the show.
Oritz will be on hand to meet fans, sign autographs and take pictures from 6:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. inside Fantasy Springs Special Events Center. The meet and greet is open to the public with the purchase of a ticket to the event.
The July 20 boxing event is presented by Golden Boy Promotions and sponsored by Corona. Doors open at 5:00p.m. PT on fight night with the first bell ringing at 6:00 p.m. PT. The FOX Sports Networks and FOX Deportes bilingual simulcast will air live at 11:00 p.m. ET/8:00 p.m. PT. and FUEL TV will rebroadcast the doubleheader on a date to be announced.
