Enzo Macarinelli needs to win in Newport next week to stay on course for a shot at all-time great Roy Jones jr.
Maccarinelli tops the bill on Warrior Promotions’ show on Saturday, October 10 and should he win, the ex-WBO cruiserweight champion could then meet Jones jr.
The fight looks set to go ahead in Russia before the end of the year – and possibly up at cruiserweight.
Now 46, Jones jr, a four-weight world champion rated the best fighter of the last 25 years by ‘Boxing News’ recently, says he wants to win world honours at 14st 4lbs before hanging up his gloves.
Jones jr, silver medallist at the Seoul Olympics way back in 1988, has previously won world titles at middleweight, super-middleweight, light-heavyweight and heavyweight in his 26-year pro career.
Maccarinelli is still waiting to hear who he will face in Newport next year.
The show also features a rematch between Mitch Buckland and Ally Black for the vacant Celtic light-welterweight title and Bradley Pryce, the ex-Commonwealth light-middleweight champion, Alex Hughes and Zack Davies are also matched.
Tickets for the show at the Newport Centre are available from 07821-004684.
