Former NABA Cruiserweight champ, Denton Daley, is returning to the ring on Saturday August 29th in Mississauga to face “The Romanian Wrecking Machine” Giulian Ilie.
Ilie will be stepping into the ring for the first time ever in North American on Saturday August 29th to face “The Canadian Sensation” for United Promotions “Biggest Fight of the Summer”, when they rock The Hershey Center in Mississauga with another stacked card of boxing action.
Denton Daley sat down with Kocosports’ own “Fighting Irish” Gerry O’Neill to tell us how things are going as he prepares for the big fight, and to respond to some of Giulian Ilie’s comments from his interview last week.
KS: Denton, thank you for once again taking time out from your busy schedule to chat with us. On August 29th in Mississauga you are going to be back in the ring facing “The Romanian Wrecking Machine” Giulian Ilie, can you tell us a little bit about how your training camp has been going, and how different have things been working with your new team?
DD: Hi Gerry, thanks for having me back, my new training camp has been going very well. The first thing I realized was that I’d stopped learning the science of boxing somewhere along the way. That all changed when I connected with my new coaching team Chris Amos and Troy Ross, so I would have to say I think my camp has been phenomenal.
KS: You are coming off a dominating win over Walter “Pájaro” Cabral back in May, now that was in front of a smaller crowd in a more intimate venue. This time you are returning to a much bigger stage at The Hershey Center in Mississauga for the first time in close to a year, tell me what that means to you?
DD: Fighting at the Hershey Centre is my home away from home. I’ve had 12 professional fights at the Hershey Centre, back when I first fought there I had some nerves of course, but I would say the nerves are now just more of an eagerness to get into the ring and fight. I just can’t wait to get out there and hear the roar of the fans again.
KS: I know that your fans mean the world to you, but your opponent, Giulian Ilie, has said fan support means nothing to him, in fact he said, and I quote: “I will not be shaken, nor will I be intimidated. When I defeated Cristian Dolzanelli, taking his IBF International Cruiserweight title from him, I did it in front of all his fellow countrymen. Canada will be no different”. Do you have any response to that?
DD: Yeah, I have a response. Giulian Ilie you won’t be taking anything away from me. I don’t like to trash talk my opponents and I really believe that all the bravado and big talk is just Giulian trying to build up enough confidence to step in the ring with me.
KS: We talked a little about your training camp and amazing new team. Ilie has claimed that training camps for Canadian fighters are easy. He said: “In Romania, the conditions are often harsher, we dont always have the opportunity to utilize all these modern training tools, so we must be stronger, tougher.” Do you think there is any truth to that claim?
DD: Again, Giulian trying to hype himself for the fight. Training camps are what you make of them and sure, here in Canada we have maybe some newer technology and fancy looking equipment, but that doesn’t mean our athletes don’t put in 110% every time they train. I’m very proud of all the great athletes Canada produces. I’ve fought fighters from all over the world, and beat them! So Giulian Ilie’s thoughts about Canadian fighters are just pure garbage!
KS: I know you won’t want to go into specifics, but in studying Ilie have you found any weaknesses in his game you believe you can exploit?
DD: We have not studied Ilie, not at all, there is nothing to study. We are ranked within the top 10 and are here for a reason. I respect every fighter and I fight each round at my complete best. I don’t need to break down his technique, my best will find his weaknesses and I will take advantage of it until he has nothing left.
KS: When we asked Ilie for his opinion on you being the favorite he told us: “Daley is young, he is hungry and he is considered the favorite by the Canadians yes, but the truth is, I traveled to other countries for big fights before, and they always consider their local hero to be the favorite. All that does is makes me better. I can relax, I dont cave-in to pressure, the pressure is all on Denton Daley.” Do you have a response to that?
DD: He is right. He says he’s got the experience I’m lacking and the pressure is on. Every fighter I have faced has had the experience advantage so he is saying nothing I haven’t heard or experienced before. We are fighting in my backyard, and I appreciate the fans support, but once that bell rings it’s just he and I and he will find out first hand why I am the favorite going into this fight.
KS: Final question, what can the fans expect to see from Denton Daley, Saturday, August 29th in Mississauga?
DD: The fans can expect to see what they always see in me when I fight. They will see me enter the ring in top form and will fight until the last second. I will give everything I have in that ring, I will put on a show for my fans and we will continue to climb the rankings and keep moving forward!
