CANASTOTA, NY – MAY 1, 2013 – The International Boxing Hall of Fame announced today legendary lightweight and junior welterweight champion Carlos Ortiz will be among returning Hall of Famers attending festivities planned for the 24th Annual Hall of Fame Induction Weekend June 6-9th.
“Carlos Ortiz was a classy fighter and a real standout talent of the 1960s,” said Hall of Fame director Edward Brophy. “It’s always exciting for fans to see Carlos in Canastota for the Hall of Fame Weekend.”
Ortiz, who was born in Puerto Rico, turned pro in New York City in 1955. During a seventeen-year professional career he was world champion in two weight divisions, reigning as junior welterweight champion from 1959 to 1960 and lightweight champion from 1962 to 1965 and again from 1965 to 1968. Ortiz, who was elected into the Hall of Fame in 1991, posted a 61-7-1 (30 KOs) record that includes wins over Johnny Bizzarro, Kenny Lane and Hall of Famers Joe Brown, Duilio Loi, Ismael Laguna, Sugar Ramos and Flash Elorde.
Events planned for the weekend include a banquet, a night of welterweight warriors, parade, golf tournament, boxing autograph card show, cocktail party and the Official Induction Ceremony honoring the Class of 2013. Inductees include two-division champion Arturo “Thunder” Gatti (posthumous), five-time world champion Virgil “Quicksilver” Hill and two-time light flyweight champion Myung-Woo Yuh in the Modern category; “Let’s Get It On” referee Mills Lane, ring announcer Jimmy Lennon, Jr. and journalist Colin Hart. Posthumous inductees in the Old-Timer, Pioneer, Non-Participant and Observer categories will also be honored.
An impressive list of over 40 boxing greats from the United States and abroad are scheduled to participate in weekend festivities including Marvelous Marvin Hagler, “Irish” Micky Ward, James “Buddy” McGirt, Pipino Cuevas, Aaron “The Hawk” Pryor, Julian Jackson, Wayne McCullough, Lucia Rijker, Mia St. John, Gerry Cooney, Gasper Ortega, Tony DeMarco, Danny “Little Red” Lopez, Tracy Harris Patterson, Ruben Olivares and many more.
