Buddy McGirt Set For HOF Weekend

The International Boxing Hall of Fame announced today two-division world champion and standout trainer James “Buddy” McGirt is set to participate in festivities planned for the 2015 Hall of Fame Induction Weekend June 11-14th.

“From his championship reigns in the ring to his great work in the corner, Buddy McGirt has dedicated his life to the ‘sweet science,’” said Hall of Fame director Edward Brophy. “We are very much looking forward to his return to Canastota in June for the weekend celebration.”

Fighting out of Brentwood, NY, McGirt is the former IBF junior welterweight and WBC welterweight champion. He holds wins over Saoul Mamby, Frankie Warren, Howard Davis, Jr., Livingstone Bramble and Simon Brown. During his career he posted a 73-6-1 (48 KOs) record. Now a highly respected trainer, he has worked with such fighters Arturo “Thunder” Gatti, Antonio “Magic Man” Tarver, Nate Campbell and Matthew Macklin among many others.

“I love the Hall of Fame Weekend! The fans are great and Canastota makes everyone feel like a champion. It’s always exciting,” said McGirt.

Events planned for the weekend include a banquet, parade, golf tournament, boxing autograph card show, cocktail party and the Official Induction Ceremony honoring the Class of 2015. Living inductees include heavyweight champion Riddick “Big Daddy” Bowe, featherweight champion “Prince” Naseem Hamed, lightweight champion Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini, light flyweight champion Yoko Gushiken, manager Rafael Mendoza, referee Steve Smoger, journalist Nigel Collins and broadcaster Jim Lampley. Posthumous inductees in the Old-Timer and Non-Participant categories will also be honored.

An impressive list of over 40 boxing stars from the United States and abroad, including “The Raging Bull” Jake LaMotta, Nino Benvenuti, Michael Spinks, “Irish” Micky Ward, William Joppy, Ray Mercer, George Chuvalo, Peter Manfredo Jr., Pipino Cuevas and Ruben Olivares, are scheduled to participate in the weekend
