The British Lionhearts lost 5-0 to the Russian Boxing Team tonight in Moscow in the World Series of Boxing (WSB).
Points losses for Ashley Williams, Enrico De La Cruz, Sam Maxwell and Abdoulaye Diane, along with a TKO for debutant Dan Woledge sealed a difficult night for an inexperienced Lionhearts team against a powerful Russian outfit which contained two World Championship silver medallists.
A tough start to the evening saw Wales’ Ashley Williams lose out to the strong southpaw, Vasiliy Egorov.
He was followed into the ring by the Lionhearts’ Dutch representative, Enrico La Cruz, who gave a good account of himself in the bantamweight contest but did not have enough to threaten Russia’s 2013 AIBA World Championship silver medalist, Vladimir Nikitin.
The light-welterweight contest pitched the Lionheart’s Sam Maxwell against Russia’s Vitaliy Dunaytsev and although the Englishman showed some of his customary skills, with a series of straight jabs and backhand rights, he could not do enough to avoid his first defeat of the season.
The middleweight contest proved to be baptism of fire for Dan Woledge who can count himself very unlucky to come-up against an opponent as accomplished opponent as Russia’s Petr Khamukov on his WSB debut and the contest ended before the first round was complete, when the Lionhearts corner made the decision to pull out the English boxer.
A points defeat for the Lionheart’s French boxer, Abdoulaye Diane against another 2013 AIBA World Championship silver medalist, Evgeny Tishchenko, in the heavyweight contest rounded off a difficult for the Lionhearts, who now sit fourth, out of eight teams, in Group A of WSB.
Next-up for the Lionhearts is an away fixture in Havana against the Cuba Domodores on Friday 20 February, followed by a home match against the Mexico Guerreros on Thursday 26 February 2015 at York Hall in London. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased online at www.ticketsdirect.org.uk/wsboxing priced £10 adults, £5 children (under 16).
