Lightweight Derry Mathews (33-8-2, 18 KO’s) was able to pull out a 10th round TKO win over Tommy Coyle (15-2, 6 KO’s) tonight in a fight that Mathews was on the verge of losing at the Craven Park Stadium, Hull, Yorkshire, United Kingdom. Mathews hit Coyle with a perfectly timed left hook that sent him down on the canvas.
Coyle was able to climb off the canvas but the fight was stopped once he got back to his feet. Had the referee Phil Edwards allowed it to continue, Mathews would have likely landed another similar bomb on Coyle’s chin he would have gone down the same way. The fight was stopped at 2:41 of the round.
Lee Selby (16-1, 6 KO’s) proved that he’s world class tonight in beating WBC International featherweight champion Viorel Simion (16-1, 7 KO’s) by a 12 round unanimous decision at the Craven Park Stadium, Hull, Yorkshire, United Kingdom. The judges scored the fight 118-110, 115-113, and 116-112.
Using a high volume punching attack, super bantamweight contender Chris Avalos (23-2, 16 KO’s) outworked the quicker and harder hitting Drian Francisco (24-2-1, 19 KO’s) in winning a 10 round unanimous decision tonight at the Texas Station Casino, Las in Vegas, Nevada, USA.
WBO interim light welterweight champion Mike Alvarado (34-1, 23 KO’s) wants to be paid well to face welterweight Ruslan Provodnikov (22-2, 15 KO’s) on October 19th. Alvarado’s promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank will be meeting with him next week to try and iron out a deal between him and the hard hitting Russian Provodnikov.
(Photo credit: Tom Casino/Showtime) Chepo Reynoso, the trainer for WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s), thinks Floyd Mayweather Jr’s long reign as the top fighter in boxing is about to end on September 14th when he faces the 22-year-old Canelo at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Reynoso believes that once Mayweather Jr. has been defeated, Canelo will start his own reign as the top fighter. It’ll be his time.
