Brodie wins, Magee outclasses Thysse

By Spud Woollatt

22.06 - When advertising his show in Manchester, Matchroom Chariman Barry Hearn promised the fans and media a "Red Hot Night In Manchester" and without doubt, this proved the case after an excellent night of boxing entertainment.

Michael Brodie, James Hare and Brian Magee were all involved in excellent wins, with the only dissapointment as far as the boxing was concerned was the loss of Richard Williams, who until last night, was viewed as the Best Light Middleweight in the country and who was expected to go onto fight for major world honours.

Another factor which simply can not be explained was the relatively sparse crowd. Barry Hearn promised to bring a quality show to Manchester, Eastside feels he did exactly that with some thoroughly entertaining fights. The show indeed was made extremely affordable to the fans at only £20 and £30 per ticket. After the show Eastside interviewed Barry Hearn and were impressed with his mood of absolute determination to continue to showcase his fighters in entertaining and competitive fights, which he said, "will eventually have fans filling arena's to capacity".

So to the fights...

Michael Brodie v Juan Cabrera

Michael Brodie fighting for the IBO World Featherweight Crown, entered the ring looking extremely apprehensive, however after the initial few seconds of the first round he set about his work which was to continue for the entire 12 rounds. Brodie's Argentinian opponent Juan Cabrera was a tough and game opponent who tried his best throughout proceedings to dampen Brodie's determination and enthusiasm. Brodie showcased his full range of punches, with British Eastside being particularly impressed in how he switched from the body to head shots with lightening speed.

Perhaps the only concern for all of the journalists sitting at ringside was in the sixth round when Brodie's left eye became badly bruised and gradually worsened as the fight progressed. Fortunately, this did not hamper Brodie's superb performance, which his promoter Barry Hearn described as the best performance by a featherweight in this country for many years.

Juan Cabrera through his steely and gritty determination made it to the final bell to listen to the judges scorecards which were scored as follows, 119 to 109 (twice) and 120 to 108.

So what is next for Brodie? Barry Hearn is extremely hopeful of bringing South Korean In Jin Chi to Manchester so he and Brodie can fight for what will hopefully be the WBC Featherweight Championship of The World. When pressed for a date for this fight, Hearn replied "Hopefully in October".

James Hare v Roman Dzuman

Perhaps an equally impressive performance as Brodie's was that of James Hare. Hare fought Roman Dzuman, a fighter from the Ukraine who ran Jawid Khaliq so closely. From the opening bell James Hare exerted his authority on the fight. Dzuman tried tirelessly throughout to land punches but was unable to do so.

Perhaps the writing on the wall came in the second round when Hare floored the Ukranian with a beautiful punch which seemed to momentarily stun Dzuman who no doubt thought that Hare did not pack a powerful punch.

Thorughout the fight it was noticeable Hare was showing the traits of a fighter who has trained at the Wincobank Gym in Sheffield under the guidance of Brendan Ingle. However many people close to Hare will say he is now more of a complete fighter fighting for trainer Chris Aston.

Dzuman made it to the final bell with the judges scoring unaminously in favour of Hare 120 to 109, 119 to 108 and finally 120 to 108.

In an interview after the fight, British Eastside expected James to be full of predicitions but were again hugely impressed how the man from Huddersfield still had his feet firmly on the ground. Hare state "I am not going to make any predictions about my future. It is entirely up to Barry Hearn and Tommy Gilmour my manager who I fight in the future".

When Hare was pressed about a fight with Khaliq, he stated "It is unlikely I will ever fight Jawid", this was also confirmed by Hare's Manager Tommy Gilmour who was understanbly extremely proud of Hare's performance. Gilmour stated "James and Jawid are on different career paths and it is extremely fortunate to have 2 such gifted Welterweight boxers in this country, it is unlikely they will meet in the forseeable future".

Brian Magee v Andre Thysse

To date this was Brian Magee's best performance against David Starie conqueror South African Andre Thysse.

The overall story of the fight was one of Thysse trying his best to land with his jab but looking too slow and ponderous as Magee countered with lightening speed with 2 and 3 punch combinations. Magee never for one second allowed Thysse to settle into a rythmn and also what else is worthy of mention is Magee never allowed Thysse to box at range to make his reach advantage count.

It was a clinical and very impressive display by the Northern Irish fighter. The defining round was the seventh round. Magee landed with some extremely effective punches which made Thysse visibly sag.

In rounds eight and nine Magee turned on the pressure against the very durable and brave South African, but as the fight was nearing the end of the tenth round Magee piled on the pressure and the Ref stopped the fight with only 12 seconds remaining.

In his post fight interview the entire "Team Magee" were absolutely delighted with the result. Brian stated he has never lossed faith in his ability to achieve his aims and was distinctly aware of some criticisms that have been levelled at him in the past. Barry Hearn was extremely impressed with Magee, but stated to British Eastside "I will need to match Brian Magee very carefully in the future. Every fight needs to be competitive, and as you have seen in tonights performance, Brian raises his game against quality opposition". When British Eastside pressed for possible opponents Glenn Catley and Robin Reid were mentioned amongst
others.

Richard Williams v Sergio Matinez

In a realtively big shock last night, Richard Williams lost his IBO Light Middleweight Title to Sergio Martinez an Argentinian who now resides in Madrid Spain.

Martinez came into the fight with a 28-1-1 record but most of those fights came in the Welterweight Division. Hindsight is a wonderful thing and perhaps it cna now be seen it was a risky fight to take against the Argentian who was ranked independently as the NO8 Welterweight in the World.

Although Williams had Martinez down twice, many people ringside were shocked at the ease the Argentian was landing with his 2 and 3 punch combinations throughout the entirety of the fight.
In addition people were shocked as they felt Williams looked lethargic and cumbersome in the way he went about his work.

Williams was floored in the closing rounds and how he survived until the final bell was a tremendous show of grit and determination. Alas it was not meant to be the judges scoring in favour of the Argentinian 115-110, 115-112 and 116-110.

British Eastside spoke exclusively to Richard Williams after the fight and were completely taken back with his frank and to the point honesty. He stated he had absolutely no excuses for his poor showing.

Other results from the evening were:

Danny Ventor beat Derek McCafferty Pts 4

Wayne Pinder beat Howard Clarke Pts 4

Alan Page beat Marcin Radola TKO 2
