14.03 - The WBC has ordered a lightweight elimination bout between former two-time lightweight world champion Stevie Johnston and No. 1 ranked contender Juan Lazcano to determine the mandatory challenger for world champion Floyd Mayweather.

Roy Jones Jr. will have until April 15 to decide if he wants to keep the WBC light heavyweight championship or the WBA heavyweight championship that he won on March 1.

From WBC President Jose Sulaiman:

"In commemoration of the WBC's 40th anniversary, a fight card titled Fighting for Mexico' featuring three WBC world championship bouts was held on February 22 at Plaza de Toros in Mexico City.

"All of the proceeds from 'Fighting for Mexico' went to support 'Vamos Mexico,' a private organization for the education of poor children founded by Mrs. Martha Sahagun de Fox, the wife of Mexican President Vicente Fox and Mexico's First Lady. Erik Morales, as well as many other fighters on the card, donated their full purses.

"Promoter Fernando Beltran organized the triple world championship boxing event. 28,000 fans were in attendance, and the card was a tremendous success.

"An anniversary dinner was held in Mexico City two days later. Numerous celebrities from the sports, show business and entertainment industries in Mexico attended the event. The dinner was sponsored by several organizations that have supported the WBC for years, including Corona, Baratel, Hotel Melia, and Dark Dog Energy Drink, among others.

"Current world champions in attendance at the dinner included Erik Morales , Jorge Arce, Jose Antonio Aguirre, and Ricardo Mayorga. Former world champions in attendance included Thomas Hearns, Evander Holyfield, Jeff Fenech , Alexis Arguello and Hector Camacho, as well as around 50 former world champions from Mexico, including Julio Cesar Chavez, Jose Napoles, Ruben Olivares, Miguel Canto, Daniel Zaragoza, Raul Macias, Joe Becerra, Carlos Zarate, Alfonso Zamora, Chucho Castillo, and many others.


WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP RESULTS…
February 22, Mexico City
On the "Fighting for Mexico" fight card in benefit of "Vamos Mexico," featherweight world champion Erik Morales, 43-1, with 32 knockouts, of Tijuana, Mex., defended the title with a third-round TKO win against Eddie Croft, 23-7-1, with 10 knockouts, of San Mateo, Cal. Morales scored one knockdown in the second round. He scored two more knockdowns in the third round and stopped Croft at 2:20.

Jorge Arce, 32-3-1, with 24 knockouts, of Los Mochis, Mex., defended the light flyweight world title with a knockout win at 1:40 of first round against Ernesto Castro, 8-6-1, with 6 knockouts, of Managua, Nic. Arce was making his second title defense.

Minimumweight world champion Jose Antonio Aguirre, 29-1-1, with 18 knockouts, of Mexico City, made his sixth successful title defense with a TKO victory against Juan Keb-Baas, 29-7-1, with 19 knockouts, of Merida, Mex. Aguirre was knocked down in the fourth round, but came back to stop Keb-Baas in the seventh. In a supporting bout, Daniel Ponce De Leon, 12-0, with 12 knockouts, of Cuauhtemoc, Mex., defended the WBC Youth super flyweight title with a second-round TKO win against Trinidad Mendoza, 19-5-2, with 14 knockouts, of Tijuana. Ponce De Leon, a 2000 Olympic representative for Mexico, scored a knockdown and stopped Mendoza in the second round. Jorge Kahwagi, 7-1, with 7 knockouts, of Mexico City, successfully defended the WBC International cruiserweight title with a first-round knockout win against Alexei Osokin, 10-16-1, of St. Petersburg, Russia.

February 21, Miami, Florida
Cruiserweight world champion Wayne Braithwaite, 19-0, with 16 knockouts, a native of Guyana based in Brooklyn, N.Y., defended the title for the first time with a fourth-round TKO win against Ravea Springs, 25-3, with 19 knockouts, of Cincinnati, Oh. Braithwaite scored two knockdowns in the
fourth round, and referee Tommy Kimmons stopped the fight at 2:41. After the fight, Braithwaite said, "It's hard to get on top. It's harder to stay on top. You've got something everybody else wants."
