The Proverbial Boxing Horizon

Walter C. Donovan, III

06.09 - The good, the bad, and downright atrocious are accurate labels of boxing's offerings over the next few weeks. Basically, we're skipping the hors d'oeurves and diving straight to the main course.

Ronald "Winky" Wright vs. Bronco McKart (IBF Junior Middleweight title; 12 rounds)
On the Jones-Woods undercard this Saturday, let's see if McKart can get it right against Wright this time. Right against Wright…that's funny. Wright holds two 12-round decisions against the pesky McKart, who's one of those Oba Carr-type of guys that are good enough to be title challengers, not good enough to be champions. McKart is tough, so he'll hang for a while….again. But again, that won't be good enough. Wright by late-rounds stoppage this time.

Roy Jones vs. Clinton Woods (WBA, WBC, IBF, IBO, and God knows what other Light Heavyweight belt; 12 rounds)
Should I even humor all of you in analyzing this "fight"? Put it this way, well-known Vegas oddsmaker Herb Lambeck installed Jones as a 100-1 favorite over Woods. Guess Woods' decision victory over Yawe Davis in a WBC title elimination bout wasn't enough to sway the opinion of the oddsman, much less anyone else. This may even be easier for Jones than his "chicken-punch" destruction of Glen Kelly. Jones by TKO anytime he decides to go for it.

Hector Camacho Jr. vs. Arturo Urena (USBO Welterweight title; 12 rounds)
Pardon me while I hide my exaltation, but it's difficult to get enthralled over a bout between men who are coming off losses. The intriguing thing is both lost to the same guy, Omar Weis. Weis is tough, so Camacho and Urena could've done a lot worse. Urena-long on heart, short on ability. Camacho-decent ability. Heart? It's there, despite what we all saw in his HBO-televised technical draw against Jesse James Leija. Perhaps Camacho will be forced to go twelve this time. If not, at least into the fifth round. Either way, Camacho wins.

Oscar De La Hoya vs. Fernando Vargas (WBC/WBA Junior Middleweight titles; 12 rounds)
Ah, now that's more like it. The man with the better chin usually wins, and that's De La Hoya. Nevertheless, his hunger and ambition relative to Vargas' are in serious question. Fernando apparently would rather die than lose to this man. Shows you he's as serious as a heart attack, and wants to polish off "The Golden Boy" badly. Vargas has shown a shaky chin against Felix Trinidad, Wilfredo Rivera, and even Shibata Flores in winning the vacant WBA title. Can desire, determination, and superb conditioning more than compensate for a questionable jaw? Absolutely! Vargas by split decision in a good old-fashioned tactical shootout.

And for those who crave even more action, Kingsway Boxing will be hosting their White Collar Show on September 13th, located at 1 West 28th Street (Between Broadway and 5th Avenue) in New York City. Kingsway, the prestigious gym owned by Michael Olajide Sr., co-owned by his wife Kay, and the training home for heavyweight contender Jameel McCline, will showcase a martial arts exhibition by Nathan "Apollo" Ingram, and several exhibition bouts between Kingsway and Westbuty P.A.L. fighters. Tickets are $15 each by reservation (212-679-3427), and $20 each at the door. Start time is 7 p.m., so don't be late!

Given all this good upcoming action, boxing is still alive and well…even in a world where Roy Jones and Bernard Hopkins won't kiss and make up.

I'm gone…your mo'fo with the gusto,
