Klitschko stable mates looking for their break through

21.10 - Hamburg - Whereas Vitali and Wladimir Klitschko are heading huge boxing events on November 23 in Germany and on December 7 in the US, several of their stable mates are hoping for their big coming out following in the wake of the Ukrainian giants.

Former Cruiserweight world champion Juan Carlos Gomez

Universum Box-Promotion’s show on November 23 in Dortmund will be headed by Dr. Vitali Klitschko fighting against American Larry Donald.

One man on the undercard dominated the cruiserweight division from 1998 to 2001 when he held the WBC 190 lb. title and defended it a phenomenal 10 times: Cuban Juan Carlos Gomez, 36-0 (31), one of the naturally most skilful boxers worldwide and a highly entertaining performer. Earlier this year Gomez vacated his crown and went up to the heavyweight division where he scored two quick knockout victories in March and in August. The 29-year-old Cuban is currently ranked #9 by the WBC in the heavyweight division.

On his way to a world title shot at one of the major belts there is talk about Gomez facing former world champion and boxing veteran Larry Holmes in Germany. The man Gomez would love to challenge is the winner of the hotly debated fight between John Ruiz and Roy Jones for the WBA crown.

Former European heavyweight champ Luan Krasniqi

Somebody hoping for an impressive comeback is former European heavyweight champion Luan Krasniqi. The 31-year-old former amateur star held the EBU crown from January to July of this year where he lost it to Polish Przemyslaw Saleta. Krasniqi, 20-1 (11), is another addition to the interesting undercard of the Universum show in Dortmund. Beside regaining his European crown Krasniqi has focused a rematch against Saleta who in the meantime lost the EBU title to Turkish Sinan Samil Sam.

Undefeated light heavyweight Stipe Drews

Also on the undercard in Dortmund undefeated light heavyweight Stipe Drews will fight for the vacant IBF intercontinental title. It’s a big and important step for the lanky 29-year-old Croatian who is currently ranked #7 by the WBO. In his last contest Drews outscored former world title challenger Joe Siluvangi and improved his record to 21-0 with 11 knockouts.

Colorful trio to be Wladimir Klitschko’s company in Las Vegas

Before WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko will defend his crown against #1 contender Jameel McCline on December 7 at the Mandalay Bay Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas three of his stable mates will step into the ring on the undercard.

Many experts believe Russian heavyweight prospect Alexander Dimitrenko could be the successor of the Klitschko brothers one day. The hulking 6 foot 7 Dimitrenko, 5-0 (4), a former junior amateur world champion, shows loads of talent, a big punch and extremely fluid movements at the age of only 20. On December 7 he will be fighting in the US for the first time in his life.

Somebody calling himself “Mr. Hollywood” is former German amateur star Steven Küchler, 2-0 (1). The management of Universum Box-Promotion shows their confidence in the talent of the 26-year-old welterweight contender by sending him to the US in his only third professional fight. As an amateur Küchler won 235 out of 261 contests.

Completing the Las Vegan trio is undefeated cruiserweight contender Alexander Petkovic, 24-0-3 (12). Beside 24 victories, Petkovic’ record lists a technical draw due to an injury in 1998, a controversial 6-round draw to former German champion Silvio Meinel in 1999 and a draw over 12 rounds against Rüdiger May in July. This highly dramatic fight for the vacant WBC international title between the 22-year-old Petkovic and the brother of former world title challenger Torsten May was unanimously voted best fight of the evening on Universum Box-Promotion’s event on July 20 in Dortmund.
