Saleta expects tough fight against Turkish Samil Sam

09.10 - Schwerin – Next Saturday the spectators at Sport- und Kongresshalle in Schwerin, Germany, will get to see two competitive and probably highly exciting European championships.

German light heavyweight sensation Thomas Ulrich will challenge European 175 lb. champion Yawe Davis and Turkey Sinan Samil Sam will challenge reigning European heavyweight champ Przemyslaw Saleta.

Whereas the fight between Ulrich and Davis is entitled the main event and will be broadcasted live by ZDF in Germany, the probably even more thrilling affair will be the fight between the experienced Polish veteran and the undefeated Turkish hot spot.

For Saleta it will be the first defense of his EBU crown since he captured the title on July 20 from Luan Krasniqi in the heavyweight upset of the year. While the undefeated Krasniqi was expecting an easy knockout victory he overpaced himself early, faded in the mid rounds and eventually quit in round 9.

Saleta doesn’t consider his victory as an accident.

“I can box and I can use my jab. But I knew there is a very slim chance that I win on points against Krasniqi in Germany”, the eloquent and experienced Saleta, 41-4 (21 KOs), said. “So I had to be patient. Even though behind on points I was still up and coming. I went to the body and made him tired. I wanted to take his legs away but It came to the point that I took his heart away first.”

Now the Warsaw fighter with multiple tattoos will be in against the next undefeated fighter of the boxing stable of Hamburg’s Universum Box-Promotion: The 28-year-old Turk Sinan Samil Sam, 15-0 (8 KOs). Against him Saleta is expecting a completely different fight. Saleta says he only watched one fight of Samil Sam – against Polish Roman Bugaj. Sam won this fight by knockout in round 5 but had to recover from a knockdown in the opening minutes and lost some of the following rounds as well.

“Samil Sam is a strong fighter physically. I don’t think he is a puncher but he is coming forward strong. I know he is not a quitter”, Saleta knows. “I don’t expect him to quit like Krasniqi. He is a game guy. Even if he is losing on points he keeps coming. So I do expect a tough fight.”

“Honestly I believe Samil Sam will be easier than Krasniqi because of the style. However, I expect this fight to last longer than the fight against Krasniqi. It will probably last the distance.”

Saleta just opened up his own gym „Saleta Fight Club“ in Warsaw. He started to prepare for his upcoming fight on September 1st.

“Basically I have been training all the time. I started with some exercises in the middle of August. Even between the fights I stay in shape, so there is no time that I really don’t do anything. I had a good sparring, no injuries, so everything is fine.”

The 34-year-old Pole has no illusions who in this Polish-Turkish affair is probably going to be the favorite of the spectators at Sport- und Kongreßhalle in Schwerin.

“In the auditorium there will be more Turkish than Polish people. I believe the crowd will be behind him. But I don’t really care. It will probably be about the same situation as it was in Dortmund and it actually motivates me.”

“In case I beat Samil Sam a mandatory defense will be next for me. When Vitali Klitschko is going after Lennox Lewis I may be fighting Danish Brian Nielsen. But I take just one fight at a time so let’s focus on Samil Sam first.”

“I’m going to win it. I don’t really care whether it’s by decision or by knockout. I do everything to win it and I give everything I have.“
