WBO honors Michalczewski and the Klitschkos

05.11 - Panama - German-Pole Dariusz Michalczewski had all reasons to be happy when he attend the latest WBO convention in Panama last weekend. The long time WBO light heavyweight champion was awarded “Best WBO world champion of all times” by the World Boxing Organization committee. In addition he won the award “Fight of the Year” for his dramatic title defense against Jamaican Richard Hall on September 14. Michalczewski was able to stop Hall in round 10 even though he was cut over both eyes from the opening round.

Michalczewski’s honors were only part of the long list of awards given to Hamburg’s Universum Box-Promotion: WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko was awarded “Fighter of the Year” whereas Universum chief coach Fritz Sdunek captured the award of “Trainer of the Year” and promoter Klaus-Peter Kohl was elected “Promoter of the Year” for the fourth time.

Michalczewski considers his awards as additional arguments for seeking an unification fight against American Roy Jones Jr. “Hopefully Roy finally realizes that he has to fight me”, “Tiger” Michalczewski said who personally attended the ceremony in Panama. He made no comment on Roy Jones’ intention to seek a title fight at heavyweight. “Jones is really no super champion”, Michalczewski said.

For their humanitarian engagement Dr. Vitali and Dr. Wladimir Klitschko were additionally honored with the “Gordon Vokeman Award”, an award for their support of the UNESCO.
