Boxing promoterJimmy Burchfield's summer on the road

24.07 - NORTH PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island - Veteran pro boxing promoter Jimmy Burchfield, founder and president of Classic Entertainment & Sports, Inc., has traveled across the country thus summer following his fighters from New England to Hollywood and eventually down to Miami.

"It's been kind of hectic," he said, "but that's what it's all about in this business."

Last week, Burchfield traveled to Hollywood (CA) as a special guest of Hugh Hefner at the Playboy Mansion, where CES fighter Richard "The Alien" Grant gave hot prospect Jeff Lacy all he could handle before dropping a 10-round decision on ESPN2 Tuesday Night Fights.

"The respect given to me at The Mansion was unbelievable," Jimmy remarked. "Hugh Hefner is a great man who loves boxing. I'd love to have Vinny Paz' attempt at his 50th career win fought at the Playboy Mansion. Hef took time to speak with me and show me all around the mansion. It was a wonderful experience. There were so many celebrities to rub elbows with like James Can and Dr. J. Some beautiful Playboy Bunnies were there, too.

"Grant took the fight on 10 days notice and he sparred a total of only eight rounds. He gained more fans, though, from Hef right on down, from his gutsy performance. CES is very proud of Richard."

Jimmy flew back home the following morning and almost immediately drove to Hyannis (MA) in order to serve as co-promoter of "Battle Zone at The Tent," featuring winning performances by CES welterweight "Sucra" Ray Oliveira in the co-feature and Jaime "Hurricane" Clampitt, in the Cape Cod Melody Tent.

Burchfield is promoting this week's ESPN2 Friday Night Fights -- "Battle You Can't Miss" -- at Foxwoods Resort Casino. The 12-round main event matches CES star Scott "The Sandman" Pemberton (25-3-1, 21 KOs), the IBU super middleweight title-holder, against two-time world title challenger Omar Sheika (23-4, 16 KOs) for Pemberton's IBU world title, as well as the vacant NABF super middleweight championship. Another of CES' hot fighters, IBU World lightweight champion Gary "Tiger" Balletto (28-1-2, 25 KOs), of Providence, makes his first defense against Luis Lizarraga in the 10-round co-feature

As soon as the Foxwoods card is history, Burchfield will concentrate on being co-promoter at his third straight ESPN2 Friday Night Fights show, August 1 at the Casino Ballroom in Hampton Beach (NH), featuring CES world cruiserweight contender Richie "The Mountain" LaMontagne in the 10-round main event against "Cowboy" Dale Brown. Also on the card are CES stablemates "Bad" Chad Dawson, Missy "The Deadly Deputy" Fiorentino and Paul Delgado in his CES debut.

A few days later, Burchfield will head to Miami where CES' Elio "El Chingo" Ortiz, IBU World welterweight champion, challenges NABF title-holder Teddy Reid in the 12-round co-feature August 9 on Showtime Boxing.

Then, just maybe, Jimmy Burchfield will have a few days rest, or at least he should, before planning additional shows and making fights for his growing stable of nearly 40 pro boxers. It comes with the territory and he wouldn't have it any other way.
