ECHOLS SAYS NO TO NEW ENGLAND MATCHUP ON NOV. 24TH

18.11 - The world’s #1 rated contender and NABF & NABA super middleweight champion Antwun Echols has pulled out of his scheduled fight with former NABF & NABO super middleweight champion Scott “The Sandman” Pemberton.

The November 24th fight was to be part of a special Sunday afternoon ESPN2 boxing event originally slated for the Pepsi Arena in Albany, NY. The show has been in limbo since late last week when local promoter Alfredo Marchio pulled the plug on the show due to the lack of ticket sales. Promoter Jimmy Burchfield has been scrambling to find a home for the site and it now looks like it will be headed to New England.

Echols pulled out of the fight, citing his refusal to face Pemberton in New England, essentially Pemberton’s home turf. Pemberton will now take on Anwar Oshana in the main event in a bout that may be for the interim NABF title. According to Burchfield, he is in the process of seeking the interim status with the NABF.

Oshana brings a 23-2, 13 KO’s record into the fight against the 24-3-1, 20 KO’s Pemberton. Oshana’s only two losses have come at the hands of Omar Sheika and Thomas Tate. Pemberton is coming off a thrilling loss at the hands of former world champion Charles Brewer.

“This fight will happen,” said Burchfield. “We have received preliminary approval from ESPN on the Pemberton-Oshana main event and we have two sites ready to roll on this fight 100%. We are just awaiting word back on a few sponsors which will make a difference which of the two sites we choose. That should be done by Monday.”

According to Burchfield tickets to the special ESPN2 show should go on sale by Tuesday. To reserve tickets call 401-724-2253.
