Billy Tompkins To Fight On Mesi Undercard

26.08 - Tony Holden Promotions announced today that popular Buffalo heavyweight Billy Tompkins will box on the undercard of the "Night of the Young Heavyweights" show.

Tompkins, 36, left his ring career behind in 1998 after losing a close 4 round decision to Dayton Wheeler at the Mohegan Sun Casino, in Connecticut. He has amassed a fine professional record of 15-2, 12 KO's, by doing it the hard way. All his fights have been on the road.

"I always wanted to fight at home in Buffalo but it looked like I'd never get the chance. The closest I ever came was fighting in Rochester. There wasn't much happening in Buffalo until Joe Mesi burst on the scene."

As an amateur, Tompkins was a two time Empire State Games Silver Medallist. He made his pro debut in 1991 when he scored a sensational first round knockout over Andrew Camper in Albany, New York. He won his first 13 fights, 10 by knockout.

Tompkins said he has maintained his fitness during his sabbatical from the ring by working out at the gym and practicing karate. "You know I truly believe I am a warrior. I just have that competitive edge. Fitness is 75% of the victory and you will never see me in a fight where my opponent is in better shape than I am."

Tompkins cites Joe Mesi as being a big inspiration to him. "I sparred with Joe when he first started boxing. He was strong and he could fight. He weighed about 290 pounds then. I told him it's a lot of work and what you always have to do is make sure you are training harder than your opponent."

Tompkins said the improvement in Mesi has been remarkable. "He needed to be pushed a little bit in the beginning, but now he's unstoppable. I think he is one of the two or three best conditioned boxers in the game today. Now I look up to him."
