Quintana Remains Unbeaten, Dunne Knocks Out Lacey in the First Round

04.07 - In a terrific performance, undefeated welterweight Carlos "El Indio" Quintana registered a lopsided 10-round decision over Vinroy Barrett Thursday on "ShoBox: The New Generation" on SHOWTIME. In the co-feature, undefeated Bernard "Ben" Dunne looked sensational as he knocked out Mario Lacey in the first round. The doubleheader from The Harv Theater at the Mountaineer Race Track And Gaming resort was promoted by Sugar Ray Leonard Boxing, LLC. The telecast, which aired at 11 p.m. ET/PT, was the 32nd in a series of "ShoBox" telecasts that began on July 21, 2001.

Quintana (14-0, 11 KOs), of Moca, Puerto Rico, scored two standing eight counts en route to winning by the scores of 100-88 twice and 99-91. Making his first start in 14 months, the promising two-fisted southpaw banger earned his first standing eight in the first-half minute of the seventh round. The second came in the closing seconds of the fight. The aggressor from the outset, Quintana landed numerous solid shots with both hands throughout his impressive performance.

Barrett (19-2, 10 KOs), of Negril, Jamaica, had a nine-fight winning streak end. Barrett gave his best and never quit trying to fight back, but he did not possess the offensive firepower to keep Quintana off him long enough to inflict any significant damage.

Dunne (8-0, 7 KOs), of Los Angeles, by way of Dublin, Ireland, floored Lacey twice en route to scoring his third consecutive first-round knockout. Dunne dropped Lacey the first time with a straight left jab at approximately the midway point of the round. He finished Lacey at 1:51 with a perfectly placed left hook to the liver. Dunne, a rising star in the Sugar Ray Leonard Boxing stable, captured 11 national titles while compiling a record of 119-11 in the amateurs. He is trained by Freddie Roach in Hollywood, Calif.

Lacey (6-2-3, 5 KOs), of Pritchard, Ala., entered the bout having won three in a row inside the distance, but he was outclassed in this one. Lacey's other loss came against another sensational prospect, Francisco "Panchito" Bojado, on April 20, 2001.

The best of the new generation of hungry, young boxers will have an opportunity to showcase their talent and heart as they battle each other in competitive fights in front of a national television audience.
