ROY JONES Jr. V CLINTON WOODS

By Seán Campbell

02.09 - On Saturday 7 September, Sheffield's own Clinton Woods will hope to go down in history for one of the biggest upsets in boxing history. He takes on Roy Jones jnr, in Portland, Oregon. Roy Jones jnr, the light-heavyweight champion of the world, is considered by many boxing pundits and fans to be the best pound for pound boxer in the world, and has been for the last ten years. Jones has a record of 46 wins, 37 by knockout, 1 loss and 0 draws. His only loss came against Montell Griffin in March 1997. He lost by disqualification after hitting Griffin while he was on the floor. Jones won the rematch the following August with a knockout in the first round.

Clinton Woods has an impressive record himself, with 32 wins and 1 defeat. But unlike Jones, Clinto Woods is very unknown in the boxing world. Naseem Hamed, also from Sheffield is the one who takes the headlines. Woods has won the British, Commonwelth and European titles and is still largely unrecognised. But with his upcoming fight against Jones more people are paying attention to the 30-year-old Woods.

Woods has never fought outside bar one contest against Terry Ford which was staged in Warsaw, Poland. This may be an indication that Woods is not yet good enough to conquer America. Woods seems happy fighting against nobody fighters, or 'lesser heard of' boxers. But if he is to make it big he needs better fighters, and they don't come much better than Roy Jones.

Jones, from Pensacola, Florida has fantastic hand speed, and great footwork has gone from middleweight right through to light-heavyweight. There have been calls for Jones to fight undisputed middleweight champion Bernard Hopkins, and that should be the main target for Jones should he beat Woods.

Woods very much deserves the chance to fight Jones but other good fighters have fought their best but their best just wasn't quite good enough. It's hard to see how this fight will be any different.
