Predictions From Tha' Eastside

Mike Samuels

17.04 - This Saturday the brash and often criticized "Pretty Boy" Floyd Mayweather will make the second defense of his WBC lightweight championship when he steps into the ring with the hard hitting late replacement Victoriano Sosa.

As usual, there isn't much buzz about this fight.

I mean if it's not Mayweather in there against the Spadafora who really cares what happens?

The reality is that there aren't many people who want to watch Mayweather fight these days. And perhaps that's why he has brought up the idea - yes, he was perfectly 'sane', might I remind you - of moving up from 135lbs to 154lbs to face boxing's top draw, "The Golden Boy" Oscar De la Hoya.

While many feel it's all publicity, Floyd himself is dead serious. However far fetched a bout between the two may seem, it helps that both Mayweather and De la Hoya are Bob Arum stable mates, and with that in mind the possibility of this fight panning out in late 2004 seems very strong.

But what about Victoriano Sosa? Hello? Anyone out there?

For Sosa it's been a life long dream to face one of boxing's pound for pound fighters. The fight couldn't have come at a better time either, with Raul Baulbi losing to a journeyman and ruining his shots at gold, Sosa jumped the gun to step into the ring this week. Now with all the upsets of late, and some believing that Mayweather may be to worried about De la Hoya, Sosa has got to be feeling confident going into this weeks title bout. After all, he is the one man to knock down the IBF lightweight champion Paul Spadafora, only to lose a very close and controversial decision afterwards.

So with people licking their chops at a potential Mayweather-Spaddy match up, maybe this week will be interesting.

This week is the first week of "Predictions From Tha' Eastside," a column idea given to me by last weeks guest mail bagger Bill Harris. It's something we here at Eastside Boxing have thought about for a few months, and now it's finally happening.

From now on, starting with this weeks big title fight between Mayweather and Sosa, a select view from the "Eastside Crew" will be weighing in with their opinions, however crazy or unethical they may be. I noticed that it's hard to get a hold of a lot of our top writers due to the business of the boxing world and the many states and places to cover, so this week's column will only feature predictions from myself (yeah, I know it's hard to believe that I'm a top writer), Ron Widelec, and Clinton Mollett. As each big fight happens look for more and more of your favorite writers predictions.

Before we get into just who is going to be doing what on Saturday, let me make it perfectly clear that we here at Eastsideboxing.com take no responsibility whatsoever for any wagers or bets that are lost on you, the readers half, based on our predictions. We're good, but we're no Ron "Champ" Miller. That guy never misses. But if you do take our good advice and win any sort of money, I'd be happy to accept all donations in the name of Eastsideboxing.com.

Just kidding.

Ron Widelec

I see Mayweather by Lopsided TKO win; probably 10 rounds to 2 or so, with several of the rounds being competitive. Mayweather has looked good at 135, but his power has not increased with the weight increase. He will poke his way to victory using a good jab, to head and body, and the occasional combo to secure the rounds.

I've seen Sosa fight only once that was against Paul Spadafora about 2-3 years ago. He did pretty well but not well enough on his way to a point's loss. I can't imagine him beating Floyd especially a Floyd who may be out to prove something so I'm going to go with the flow and say Mayweather WTKO10

Growing up in Grand Rapids, Michigan I have to always give my props to Floyd Mayweather, no matter how many people love or hate him. I see Sosa as a game fighter. He'll be someone who will give Mayweather a bit of trouble early, but it's only a matter of time before Floyd's superior speed will catch up to him. Don't worry about Mayweather's hands, they'll be fine this week. If you're smart, look for the "Pretty Boy" to inflict a great amount of punishment on Sosa, in route to a 7th round TKO.
