Philippine title fight results

By Dennis Principe

21.01 - CEBU City, Philippines - UNDEFEATED Philippine junior welterweight champion Dindo "Diesel" Castaqares kept his title by stopping challenger Rex Marzan in the 7th round of their "Sinulog Boxing at the Mall" 12-round main event Sunday night at the Gaisano Country Mall car park in this city.

A powerful overhand right by Castaqares found its mark right into Marzan´s jaw, dropping the challenger unconscious which forced referee Teddy Alivio to stop the bout.

Luckily, Marzan was able to regain consciousness after about two minutes.

In the undercard, flashy Philippine #7 flyweight contender Z Gorres kayoed late sub Ricky Escaner in the fourth round, impressing lawyer Rudy Salud who was at ringside.

Salud is currently in Cebu trying to find talents for his planned boxing stable which will be handled by his former ward, ex-WBC superflyweight champion Gerry Peqalosa.

Salud is holding talks with Cebu boxing patron Antonio Aldeguer and are discussing the possibility of teaming-up with an objective of producing several world champions. Gorres and Castaqares are products of Aldueger´s new generation ALA Boys.

Other ALA boys who impressed Salud were RP#1 Bart Abapo and RP#7 flyweight contender Sherwin Paro.

Abapo dropped veteran Samuel Duran once each in the 5th and 6th rounds but the latter was afterwards disqualified for illegal blows in the 8th round.

After shoving Abapo, Duran let loose two uppercuts while his opponent was kneeling.

On the other hand, Paro needed four rounds in disposing off Julius Jalnaiz.

Meanwhile, on the same night in Taguig, Metro Manila, 10 years of fighting professionally may be worth the waiting for Cebuano boxer Bert Batawang as he finally won the vacant Philippine lightflyweight in convincing fashion at the Cantada Sports Complex.

Not even a sprained back and a a total of four headbutts dampened the spirit of the 27-year old Batawang from scoring a lopsided 120-108, 118-96 and 115-105  unanimous decision over Cantada protigi Rodel Quilaton.

Quilaton ´s dirty tactics caused a deep gash above Batawang ´s left eye as a one-and-a-half inch cut on his forehead.

Batawang previously fought but lost for the same title crown over previous titleholder Wyndell Janiola. The title was vacated by Janiola, who will be fighting for the IBO world title versus Monelisi Mhikiza Myekeni on February 15 in South Africa.
