Busy boxing weekend for Filipino boxers

By Dennis Principe

18.01 - Manila, Philippines - It will be a day of reckoning tomorrow for WBO Asia-Pacific lightflyweight champion Roy Doliguez of the Philippines as he moves up in weight and  takes a rare opportunity of snatching a world crown currently held by a "Mexican killer".

19-year old Saranggani native Roy Doliguez (12-2-3, 5 KO´s) will try to snatch the WBO superflyweight title versus defending champion Fernando "Cochulito" Montiel in Los Mochis, Mexico.

The undefeated Montiel (24-0-1, 18 KO´s) a longtime WBO flyweight champion, gained boxing notoriety after his last opponent, Pedro "El Rockero" Alcazar died two days after their WBO superflyweight title fight last June 22 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Alcazar collapsed in his hotel and later died at the Desert Springs Hospital where it was established that the boxer succumbed to significant swelling of the brain.

In the undercard, former WBO minimumweight champion Eric Jamili (15-8-2, 9 KO´s), a native of Silay, Negros Occidental,  makes a comeback by facing NABO lightflyweight champion Hugo Cazares (14-3-1, 11 KO´s) in a 10-round, non-title fight.

Meanwhile in Cebu, Philippine superlightweight champion Dindo "Diesel" Castaqares makes his second defense of his title versus RP #2 contender Jun Marzan in a free-to-the-public boxing card set also tomorrow night.

Castaqares (11-0, 8 KO´s), the Oriental Pacific (OPBF) mandatory contender, is eyeing a crack at the regional title middle of this year against reigning champion Masakazu Satake of Japan.

In the same boxing card, Castanare´s three undefeated stablemates will see action in separate 10-rounders.

RP #1 junior lightweight contender Bart Abapo (9-0-1, 7 KO´s) trade leathers with ageing but still dangerous ex-OPBF king Samuel Duran, a former IBF world title challenger and once the WBC international champion.

Youthful ZC Gorres, RP #3 flyweight contender, faces a bigger opponent in RP #3 superflyweight challenger Eric Barcelona while RP #7-ranked Flyweight Sherwin Paro slugs it out with PBF #8 Julius Jalnaiz.

On the same night in Taguig, Metro Manila, Bert Batawang battles top contender Rodel Quilaton for the vacant Philippine lightflyweight title in a Fistorama main event at the Cantada Sports Center.

The title was vacated by former titleholder Wyndell Janiola who will be gunning for the IBO crown  versus defending champion Monelisi Mhikiza Myekeni in South Africa this coming February.
