Jaca Retains Philippine Title

By Dennis Principe

16.11 - SURIGAO CITY, Philippines – Philippine superbantamweight champion Jimrex Jaca successfully defended his title by earning a tough 12-round decision win over veteran Joel Junio last Friday at the Surigao Del Norte Provincial Gym in this city.

But what made the capacity crowd up on their feet was the classic, give and take Philippine welterweight championship brawl between defending champion Dondon Sultan and challenger Cesar Yarte.

Sultan and Yarte both exhibited relentless attacks to the head and body from the opening bell onwards. By the 11th round, Sultan showed signs of weariness after his knees buckled most of the time. However, Sultan managed to finish the said round.

With less than a minute remaining in the 12th and final round, Sultan unleashed a powerful right uppercut that hit Yarte smack on his jaw. The referee immediately waved off the fight as Yarte lay flat on the canvas. Official time was :35 seconds of the 12th round.

While Yarte was able to recover from the knockout punch, Sultan collapsed as he was about to leave the ring. Ironically, it was the champion who was brought to the hospital but was later declared out of danger.

In the night’s other main event, the 19-year old sensation Jaca (18-0, 9 KO’s) overcame point deductions due to accidental headbutt in scoring a convincing decision conquest over a more experienced Junio. Offical scores of the fight were 117-110, 117-115 and 114-113 all for the southpaw Jaca.

Meanwhile, flashy flyweight Sukarno Banjao registered a 3rd round TKO win over Jojo Rodrigo while Rudy Anhao settled for a unanmous decision victory over late sub Allan Dugang.

Jaca Defends Philippine Title

By Dennis Principe

14.11.2002 - SURIGAO CITY, Surigao Del Norte – Reiging Philippine Superbantamweight champion Jimrex Jaca puts his title on the line as he faces veteran Joel Junio for 12-rounds tomorrow at the Surigao Del Norte Provincial Gym in this bustling city.

This will be Jaca’s first title defense of the title he won over Dino Olivetti last July. The left-handed Jaca, a native of Cebu, is all pumped-up to score a convincing win after receiving a very tempting offer to campaign in the United States.

According to Jaca’s manager Rex “Wakee” Salud, the offer to campaign abroad came from American Immigration lawyer Sydney Hall.

”I agreed to Mr. Hall’s offer to bring Jaca in the United States although we still have to formalize
everything probably after the Surigao fight”. Salud said in a telephone interview.

Salud added that the undefeated Jaca (17-0, 9 KO’s) must not take his foe lightly who is a veteran of 61 professional fights. The 29-year old Junio once wore the PABA title and went the distance against reigning WBA champion Johnny Bredahl and ex-world champion Saen Sor Ploenchit.

In another Philippine title fight presented by Elorde International Productions, welterweight king Dondon Sultan of Dipolog City defends his title versus number two contender Cesar Yarte of Cagayan de Oro City.

Also, flyweight Sukarno Banjao faces Jojo Rodrigo for 10-rounds. In a battle of former amateur gold medalists, Rudy Anhao of Cadiz City tests Freddie Gimay of Bukidnon for 8 rounds.
