04.09 - ORMOC CITY, Leyte Four of the Philippines world-ranked boxers headline an explosive promotion Saturday night at the Ormoc Superdome in this city in what may serve as their stepping stone towards a crack at superstardom.
Topping the card is a 12-round Pan Asia Boxing Association (PABA) lightflyweight championship match between defending champion and local hero Marvin Leyte Bomber Tampus versus challenger Kaichon Sor Vorapin of Thailand.
The 19-year old Tampus (10-1, 7 KOs) won the crown by stopping Thai veteran Deeden Kengkarun via 7th round knockout on May 23, 2002 in Bangkok, Thailand.
Tampus defended the title once, scoring a similar 7th round knockout over Kengkarun in a rematch on November 6, 2002 also in Bangkok.
A win by Tampus, currently ranked #5 in the World Boxing Association (WBA) lightflyweight ladder, will push him closer to a chance at fighting WBA champion Rosendo El Buffalo Alvarez of Nicaragua.
In the main supporting bout, undefeated Philippine miniflyweight champion Rodel Mayol goes into his last tune-up match before fighting for the Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation (OPBF) crown on November 24.
The WBC #5 Mayol (13-0, 10 KOs) battles Namchai Thaksin-Isarn in a 10-round brawl. Should Mayol win, he will then face Japanese OPBF champion Ghenki Ohnaka in Fukuoka, Japan.
Also seeing action is International Boxing Federation (IBF) #6 contender and one-time world title challenger Wyndell Janiola who will trade mitts with Cagayans Rolando Baclayo in a 10-round non-title affair.
Meanwhile, ex-WBA minimumweight world champion and current #2 contender Joma Gamboa targets another shot at the world crown as he tangles with youthful compatriot Rodel Quilaton in another 10-rounder.
The card is promoted by Cebu-based American manager Terry Carter and supported by Ormoc City mayor Carmelo J. Locsin.
