Lewkowicz Sues Murad

03.06 - International boxing matchmaker Sampson Lewkowicz of Las Vegas has filed criminal and civil charges against promoter Murad Muhammad of Florham Park, New Jersey, in Superior Court in Carolina, Puerto Rico. A hearing is scheduled for June 16.

Lewkowicz' attorney, Benjamin Angueira, said that the criminal charges are for assault and battery, which carries a maximum penalty of six months in prison and a $500 fine.

The civil suit is for assault and defamation of character, and the suit is for the amount of $3 million.

Lewkowicz said today, "These charges come from an incident at the International Boxing Federation convention in Puerto Rico last week. Murad punched me in the face without any provocation. I cannot sit back and ignore what happened because I feel that this kind of senseless violence has no place in our society or business."

Muhammad was served with a subpoena at the gala dinner on the convention's closing night.
