Cheap Seats: Twas the night before….

Ben Pierce

19.12 - I think the air way up here in the nosebleed section has made me light headed. I think there are either sugarplums or boxing gloves dancing in my head. I am not sure, but I suppose the Christmas spirit and the boxing excitement have become tangled and mixed in my mind. It may be truth and it maybe folklore, but one thing I am sure… it twas the night before!

Twas the night of the Jones-Ruiz fight, when all through the boxing ring,
Not a creature was stirring, not even old Don King!

The boxing gloves were hung in the dressing rooms with care,
In hopes that the fighters soon would be there.

The fans were nestled in the arena and in front of their tv,
With visions of a great fight they hoped to see,

And Murad in Roy's dressing room and Stoney in with Riuz,
Just hoping this fight would go off like a breeze...

When out in the arena there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the ringside seat to see what was the matter.

Away to the front I flew like a flash,
Tore open the doors and threw open the sash.

And there on the breast of the new-fallen snow
I could see some boxing website waving a sign that said the fight was a no go!

Then, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But Roy Jones and eight other rappers coming near.

They sang with abandon, so lively and quick
I knew in a moment it had to be Roy, the old slick!

More rapid that eagles his moves were so swift
I knew this boxer was blessed with great gifts.

And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name:
Come now Darius and Bernard you want my fame...
Come Ruiz and Calzaghe you need my name...

Now into the ring I want you all!
Roy Jones is the name you have mistakenly called.

So up to the ringside they came one and all...
Thinking Roy would back out or would surely he'd fall.

As I strained to look and turned my head around
From atop the arena rafters, rapping Roy came down.

He was dressed in designer from his head to toes
His digs were so sharp, where'd he get those clothes?

He looked like boxer that was on a mission.
His eyes how they twinkled as thought of each man's submission

He had a broad face and a well chiseled belly
He laughed as his foes stood and shook like jelly

He was fit and ready, a right jolly for a man with four foes in his sights.
You could see in his eyes, he was ready to fight.

With wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
Soon his foes would know nothing but dread.

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
Knocked out Hopkins and made Darius taste dirt!

He took out Calzaghe and he showed such a grin
He always knew England's great hope could not take one on the chin.

Ruiz was next and he was simple...
It took just one punch right on the temple

After four fights Roy had barely perspired
And I heard him exclaim, I hope you saw what transpired!

To those who doubted, I could say a lot...
But I will say only one thing...yall musta forgot!

Just a bit of the seasons cheer…from the cheap seats. Hope it gave you a smile or a laugh!
