Mosley vs. Campas: The Sugar is not so sweet

By Ben Pierce

03.10 - It appears that Shane Mosley 38-2-0 (35) is making his move up to the Junior Middleweight division as promised, but his choice of foes shows his lack of confidence after suffering two straight losses. Mosley, left reeling after two straight defeats at the hands of Vernon Forrest has decided that a tune up fight is in order. He previously shunned the thought of taking an easier match after a loss, but now seems relegated to taking on a very much past his prime Yori Boy Campas 79-5-0 (67).

Campas, a tough veteran of many ring wars is coming off a tough loss to Daniel Santos and is definitely showing the wear of more than eighty wars inside the ring. He is a tough old pro, but one who has been known to quit on his stool as of late. He is talior made for Mosley, a small, straight ahead fighter, who cuts easily and has trouble with skilled boxers. It is a shame to see this great fighter now reduced to fighting only for the money and being used as a name on another fighters resume.

This fight can only be termed a confidence builder for Mosley, as Campas poses little threat any more and offers little in the way of preparation as Mosley appears headed for a showdown with Junior Middleweight king, Oscar De la Hoya. Campas and De la Hoya are a complete contrast of boxing styles.

But it will be good to see the return of Mosley as he steps back in the ring after suffering career defining losses to Vernon Forrest. He deserves a tune up fight, no matter how much he has protested against them in the past. Campas may supply some early excitement and if he can work Mosley against the ropes as Forrest did, it will be interesting to see how Mosley deals with the adversity. Campas has little left, but he still has some power and can keep Mosley honest and most likely moving in the ring, until he can wear down the old pro.

Another note to this saga, Mosley nemisis, Vernon Forrest 35-0-0 is also said to be moving up to the Junior Middleweight division also hoping to arrange a bout with De la Hoya. Forrest is said to be negotiating a fight with Javier Castillejo in the 154 pound weight class. I think Mosley would do well to avoid any matches with Vernon Forrest in the immediate future!
