Albert Sosnowski To Face Jacklord Jacobs in London

By S. Noble

03.12 - It's not often that Christmas comes early, but for young Polish heavyweight Albert Sosnowski the seventh of December might be a great deal sweeter than the twenty fifth. Despite a record of 25-1-0 with sixteen stoppages, Sosnowski has yet to achieve much recognition outside his native country. A win on Saturday in Brentwood, could be the first step towards changing that. Of course he has to beat Jacklord Jacobs first, an opponent who's professional record belies his experience inside the ropes. An outstanding amateur, Jacobs represented Nigeria in the Olympics, before turning professional at a relatively advanced age.

On paper Sosnowski has not only youth but also experience on his side. Indeed the fight is one that he cannot afford to lose, as it would cast serious doubts on his aspirations to challenge the best in Europe. He will however be aware that previous reputations count for nothing in the ring. An example of this was provided recently, when Sosnowski's countryman Przemek Saleta soundly beat German prospect Luan Krasniqi. There are some substantial differences however, Saleta was fighting for the European title, whereas Jacobs must know that only one fighter will progress from this fight. Sosnowski will also be aware that provided he fights sensibly and uses his advantages, over rounds the pace will almost inevitably begin to tell on his opponent. In addition although by far the younger fighter, the Polish prospect has far greater experience of the professional fight game, and has also been far more active than Jacobs, who has not fought regularly.

In addition Sosnowski will hope that some of London's large Polish community will provide him with some significant support. Unusually for an eastern European fighter this means that far from fighting in front of an indifferent audience, he may have spectators who actually appreciate his efforts. Most people imagine that an unexpected Christmas present would be unwrapped at home, surrounded by friends and family. For Albert Sosnowski though the perfect Christmas present may be one he gives himself, in the middle of a boxing ring.

On the undercard Polish light middleweight Piotr Bartnicki will also hope to get an early dose of seasonal cheer. Although last time he left disappointed, receiving the wrong end of a points decision, despite scoring a knockdown in the first round. One thing is certain with this former kickboxing champion, his open style means an exciting fight, since he isn't afraid to stand and trade.
