Patterson Takes Australian Cruiserweight Title!

By Tony Nobbs

07.12 - 2000 Olympic alternate Simon Patterson ( Sydney, NSW, 8-3, 3 KO) scored a knockdown in round one and dominated defending champion Jamie Wallace (Adelaide, Sth.Aust, 18-25, 3 KO) to capture the Australian Cruiserweight Title at the Southport RSL on the Gold Coast, Queensland on Friday night.

It was an entertaining and non stop fight over twelve rounds. After both boxers got out of the blocks quickly at the start of round one, both boxers being cut in the first minute and a half, a sharp right hand on the inside decked a swarming Wallace. Never wanting for character, Wallace weathered the following storm but for the first five rounds could do little but survive. Pinned against the ropes, he tried catching the challenger between punches but his opportunities were minimized Patterson's tight defense. On several occasions early, Wallace looked in danger of going down again and he was told by long time trainer Geoff "Stumpy" Neilson after the fifth stanza that the towel would be skied if he did not mount a strong rally in the sixth.

Wallace, 28, came back enough to win a few rounds on one official card, and Patterson, 29, did slow a little in the middle rounds but he lacked the punch to seriously threaten to turn the tide. Round ten saw Patterson reaffirm his superiority and Wallace went back to his corner with blood coming from his left ear. The final three minutes were a cracker. It was only the brilliant work by Wallace's cut man Bill Colledge that prevented the fight being stopped early due to a nasty cut, caused by a left hook over the right eye. It must also be said that Jamie Wallace is a far better fighter than his record suggests, he has been a promoters friend for his entire career. He has faced several solid Australian fighters on short notice and won the Title earlier this year by decision from Justin Clements on three days call up.

After the official scores of 119-109, 118-109 and 117-111 were announced, the new title holder thanked Wallace for giving him a shot. "I knew Jamie would be tough, he has been the distance with John Mugabi and other big punchers so I trained hard. Three times a day. I'd also like to thank my trainer Bruce (Farthing) who I've been with from the start, ten years, eight as an amateur and now two as a pro".

In the dressing room 15 minutes later, Geoff Neilson said Wallace would likely campaign at Lt Heavyweight if he continued his career. While both weighed close to the Cruiserweight limit on Thursay night, Patterson helsd an obvious size advantage by fight time. Promoter Jamie Myer's next show is set for this venue on Feb. 7 and will be shown live on Foxsports. Simon Patterson is expected to be back in action on that promotion.

In the main support bout, Queensland State Super Middleweight Champion Juarne "Kid Dynamite" Dowling decisively outpointed Victorian Kevin Murray in a fast paced eight rounder.Scores were 80-72(twice) and 78-74. Local prospect Paul Tapley captured the Queensland Welterweight Titlle by stopping veteran Jay Washington in seven rounds. Tapley's trainer Norm Stewart died in September and the victory proved popular with the home town fans.

North Queenslander Dan Cody won a six round unanimous decision over Gold Coaster Dale Hawke in an eliminater for the Queensland 140 lb belt. In the show opener, Joe Salquist won a split four round decision over well liked veteran Geoff Kanofski in a middleweight contest.
