MUNDINE V ECHOLS POSTPONED TO SEPT.3, HARRISON-WILSON OFF

By Tony Nobbs

05.08 - Tomorrow nights scheduled vacant WBA Super Middleweight Title bout at the Sydney Entertainment Centre between Antwun Echols and Anthony Mundine has been re set for September 3 at the same venue, no.2 contender Mundine withdrew citing a viral infection after visiting long time NSW fight doctor Lou Lewis yesterday (Monday) afternoon.

No. 1 rated Echols was at first ready to stay in Sydney but will return to the U.S with his training staff to prepare and will return a week before the new date, thirteen months to the day of the American's most recent start, a three round stoppage of Richard Grant.

While talk that Mundine's pull out was due to fear of the big puncher from Davenport Iowa - with so much at stake, the decision was the correct one. Mundine does have a history of flu problems in the lead up to fights.

Dr Lewis told reporters that the local boxer was "actually quite fatigued and had a red throat. He's definitely got this viral infection which has been sweeping Sydney. For a normal person that wouldn't be to bad, but when you've got to fight for a world title, there's no way he could get into that with this virus".

After learning of the postponement, Australian Super Middleweight Champion Shannan Taylor (WBA no.11 at 154 lb) immediately put his hand up to take on Echols, contacting WBA representative Derek Milham.

The Heavyweight main support bout between England's Sydney Olympic Gold Medallist Audley Harrison and Australian Colin Wilson will not appear on the September card. Harrison will go on to his next bout overseas and Wilson is sanctioned to fight for the vacant National Heavyweight Title against Roger Izon on a Jamie Myer Foxsport show on Sept. 19.

Meanwhile Mundine's Sydney rival, Team Fenech's Danny Green is due to fly out tomorrow for his WBC 168 lb title fight with Markus Beyer in Germany on August 17 (Australian time).
