An inside look at Corrie Sanders

By Colin Nathan

05.02 - 8th of March is the date and of course, Germany is the place. Corrie Sanders from South Africa gets the chance of a life time when he challenges the man, who many regard as the future of heavyweight boxing, Wladimir Klitschko. The fight will be contested for Klitschko's WBO title in which he won from, the current IBF heavyweight champion, Chris Byrd. He will be making his 6th defence of his title.

The Question you may be asking is: Just who is this Corrie Sanders fella? Well he is a former "world" WBU heayweight champion and has 38 wins in 40 pro fights, with 28 kos (18 in the very first round). Impressive? Absolutely. Can he punch? Without question. Does he have heart? Yes.

He had an absolute war with former (then at the time, future) world champion Hasim Rahman, for the WBU title in May 2000. He got stopped in 7 rounds in which he and Rahman were both on the canvas. It was more of a case of Sanders running out of steam, than Rahman actually stopping him.

Sanders started his pro career back in 1989 when he knocked out King Kong Dyubele in the first round in Cape Town, South Africa. From prospect to champion happened in 1991, when he knocked out former world rated heavy, Johnny Du Plooy in the first round. After becoming a world rated fighter with victories over the likes of a fading Bert Cooper and old war-horse, Levi Billips. His world came crashing down when he got flattened in 2 against Nate Tubbs in 1994, when the latter came to fill the numbers.

After re-bounding with a quick ko over a very faded former "world" cruiserweight champion Carlos Deleon, he put together some more quick wins and eventually contested for the vacant WBU heavyweight title in 1997 against Ross Puritty and won over 12 boring rounds. Yes the same Ross Puritty that stopped Wladimir in 10 rounds. Does that mean anything? No not at all.

After making 3 quick defences including victories over the likes of Bobby Czyz and Alfred Cole he ran into Hasim Rahman. After being out of the ring for nearly a year and a half, Corrie made a comeback of sorts against the british fighter, Michael Sprott and knocked him out in 1 round. The win was good for him, as Sprott is now on a five fight winning streak and recently stopped unbeaten British Champion Mike Holden in 4 rounds in a eliminator for the British Title. Sander's most recent victory over Otis Tisdale proved nothing except that Sanders can bang.

Is Sanders going to win? NO

Does Sanders have a chance? YES

Why? Well HE is a southpaw and he can punch. And this is heavyweight boxing, anything can happen.

Does he hold a punch? Sort of, though, both of his losses have been inside
the distance.

Prediction-Klitschko within 7 seven rounds.
