Champs Corner

By Ron "Champ" Miller

25.03 - Hello fight fans!!!!!! Another issue from the man you love to hate!!!!

Let's do some catching up. It's been a while. My thoughts on the Mike Tyson-Clifford Etienne fight? Disgraceful. Here I am thinking this will be a good matchup, even thinking Cliff has a chance to upset Iron Malik. Uggh, no.

Etienne did the Buster Douglas "move", just laying down. Took out his mouthpiece and took a nap. Perhaps Buddy McGirt isn't the best thing since sliced bread. Nice work Cliff. Thanks for the memories, your career is over now. Pick up your paycheck on your way out. So much for Jim Lampley saying you were the next big thing. Ask Hans and Frans, SNL fame (Wlad and Vitali Klitschko) , David Tua, and Michael Grant about that. The only thing worse about this was the fools who bet on you. Unreal.

As for Mike, this proved nothing. He can take out guys who stand in front of him and slug toe to toe. If anything I am worried about Mike's mental health. I question whether he should be in the ring. His "fight on, off, on, off" attitude was telling in itself. I really think it will end badly for Mike. He spoke of Sonny Liston. That could be Mike. Tyson can beat anyone, except the top guys. Thats not saying much. Tyson should be in counseling, not the ring.

The academy awards were last week, but a good "actor" didn't get nominated. Whom, you ask? Johnny Ruiz. You remember him. He along with Joe Cortez, gave us plenty of laughs. Remember his performance against Evander "holyhypocrit" Holyfield? Classic. V-Man hit him right on the beltline for a knockdown and knockout. But no. He squirmed around worse than a fish out of water. Sad thing is Cortez, who was behind him, didn't see a thing, but rather acted like he did. Nice. And then he has the nerve to complain about the referee? Johnny boy, you had Cortez in your back pocket. Perhaps if Cortez let you hold, grab and jab, and lean, take one punch and smother, throw one punch and clinch against Jones, you would have had a chance. Too bad. Give Roy his props, John. Well, now Johnny you can join Bruce Seldon. And take that fat, loud mouth Stoney with you. Lates. I do feel sorry for the Ruiz backers, but I would never bet on a sack of potatoes like Ruiz.

Ya'all musta forgot? No Roy. I remember. I remember how John "Louise" Ruiz is the worst champion ever. A titleholder, a paper champ, a Don King creation. So don't pat yourself too much on the back Roy. Remember a pat on the back, is only 6 inches from a kick in the butt. You aren't the real champ. The real champ is Lennox Lewis. You remember him, right?

We all know you take the least risk matches for the most money and you only fight people you know you can beat. You thought by handpicking this fraud, that your "legacy" would be saved. Sorry ole Roy. It's not. Your legacy is James Toney. A fat, lazy, out of shape baldy. Now you are picking on Holyfield, who is shot, old and done? Shame on you Roy. Shame, shame, shame. While I give you props, let's not get too carried away, alright?

Hey Antonio Tarver, why you calling out Roy? You need to take care of your own business. Don't try to ruin the man's party. Ball headed bastard...lol. And take Dariusz Michalczewski (Michalsh@tski) with you. This guy is gonna move up to fight Roy? Give me a break. Ruiz would beat this Euro chump. Hey Dariusz, you could have come over here to fight Roy. But no. Wanna know why? Cause you can't beat ole Roy. But you want to keep your name in the picture. Like Winky Wright. Everyone ducks him as well. What about Bernie"I need dental work" Hopkins calling out Oscar Delahoya and Roy. Never mind. I havent paid attention to Bernard since he beat Tito"cheato"Trinidad. Talk about going from the penthouse to the outhouse in a year and a half. Nice going Bernie.

Let's move on to Wladimir Klitschko. This was the next big thing. The heir apparent to Lennox Lewis. He would beat Lewis. Do you smell that odor? Its Wlad crashing and burning. I never believed the hype. Wlad was a euro stiff, who fed on the euro circuit and was exposed. Plain and simple. Lewis knew the deal. He would have taken him out in 1 rd tops.

The Quitshko's remind me of the Wizard of Oz story. Like the tinman, lion and strawman. No heart, chin or courage. Pathetic. I was overjoyed to say the least. Can he come back? Yes. But losses to Ross Purity and Corrie Sanders is worse than Lewis losing to Oliver McCall and Hasim (Hasbeen) Rahman. You can't work on your chin. There is no "chin machine" at the gym. Lewis's defense is superb compared to Klits. And please don't pump up Corrie Sanders. Sanders at 37 had fought like 3 rds in 3 years. He was a golfer. He lost to Hasbeen. He was an easy touch. 3 strikes and you are out, Wlad. Another great white hope, down the tubes. Ask Gerry Cooney about that, Wlad.

I liked what I saw in Kirk Johnson. Johnson was only down by 2 pts on 1 card and 1 pt on the other 2 cards when he was disqualified against Ruiz. It wasn't like he was getting blown out, and this was AFTER the numerous pt deductions. Just shows you how pathetic Ruiz is. I think Kirk had not fought in a yr and was rusty. He would beat Ruiz, right now. Although he wasn't in top shape, and he was fighting Lou "Savereasy" Savarese, he loooked sharp. I would rather see him fight Lewis than Tyson. They can do it in Canada.

Champs Flurries: I feel bad for Pernell Whitaker. My favorite fighter, the real p4p champ before Delahoya. He needs help, not bars. Only a few more days until Rahman will be in unconscious. Unfortunately he is about 5 yrs too late. Glad to see the right guy got the nod in the Cory Spinks v Michele Piccirillo. Better late than never, I guess. I have been hard on Acelino Freitas. If he beats Joel Casamayor in the rematch, I will be a fan. He is a unified, undefeated champ. That has to count for something. His opponents don't. Is Arturo Gatti ducking Sharmba Mitchell? Seems like it. Is it me or is Gatti a bit overrated? He should retire before he is sipping his soup out of a straw. Speaking of retirement, Wayne McCullough needs to retire. Even when his brain cyst was unproven, I told him to hang em up. Having met Wayne, he is a classy good guy. He did not deserve to get beaten up by Scott Harrison. You hear that? Thats the stampede jumping on this Euro's bandwagon. I'll wait.

Something new I want to start. A little off topic, but....

Anyone care about the Sacramento Queens? I mean props for beating the Lakers, but its March, dude. Championships are won in June, last time I checked. You had them on your homecourt in a deciding game, and the only guy who wasn't scared was Bibby. I would worry a bit if I were the Lakers. Getting swept by the Spurs, and now the 7th seed. But they are the champs. Until you can knock them off...

Is Randy Johnson worth 33 million dollars? Seems a bit much for an older guy. He could be the next Kevin Brown.

My prediction on the Arizona Wildcats is right on. For now anyways. Even after the Gonzaga game (they should have won that, btw) I have faith in them. A wake up call is good. History shows that.

Well thats it fight fans!!!! Keep your hands up and keep punching for the stars!!!!!!!! And say a prayer for all the troops in harms way. Godspeed. Support the troops, the US and their brave allies.
