Champs Corner

Ron "Champ" Miller

11.08 - Hello fight fans!!! A sort of OK weekend of boxing, highlighted by Acelino Freitas. I am starting to warm up to him a bit, but still expect a whole lot more from him. I thought the Teddy Reid-Elio Ortiz bout stole the show. Ole Roy at it again? You betcha.

Seems Roy Jones is hesitant on fighting Corrie Sanders, a man HE called out. I tell ya, ole Roy has alot of people fooled, except for me. I guess after further review, he thought about it. IF Sanders connects, ole Roy will be out. I don't think he would, but this is boxing. Roy only fights when Roy wants to. He takes no risks. Now he wants Antonio Tarver? Make up your mind Roy, and stop wasting my time.

As far as Acelino goes, Barrios is a bum. Don't forget that. Don't try to "pump" this guy up to make Acelino look better. And don't downplay Popo's performance. Sure he did finish the fight strong, but I counted 3 knockdowns. 2 legit, one not. Acelino looked bad. A bit amateurish at times. Perhaps it was his opponent, but again, I don't think much of Jorge Rodrigo Barrios. Gritty, good chin, heart? Yes. But let's not get carried away. Freitas should have ended this one early. This kid was done. His ear and cuts were bad, but Acelino seemed too much of a sportsman/nice guy. Toughen up!!! I want Freitas next fight to be against the winner of Joel Casamayor-Chico Corrales. Stop fighting bums of the month!!!!

Champs Flurries: Too bad to hear that Gainer-Marquez is off. Was looking forward to this one. I thought Smoke might have been a live dog. Teddy Atlas and Michael Grant part ways? Good. I never thought much of Grant. Never bought into the hype. Grant has made good money. He should quit. Nice win for Vassily Jirov. A bit bloody, but he is staying active, which is good. The Ortiz-Reid fight was great. Action-packed, back and forth. Good stuff. Although I don't see much in Teddy's future. Listen...Thats Bernard Hopkins still talking..about what? Who cares. This guy has done nothing for for almost 2 yrs. Strange how Anthony Mundine bailed out of fighting Antwun Echols. Perhaps he didn't want to be looking up at the lights again.

Francisco Bojado. I really had high hopes for this kid. But I think it may be over. Seems like since he fell in love, its been all downhill. His devastating power is not moving up with him. He is more of a "sharp" puncher. Lemuel Nelson is tough, but I didn't see much out of Bojado. Again, the "next big thing" label, destroys another career.

I could care less if Lennox Lewis retires or not. The Lion has done it all. He has beaten everyone in his era. It was not his fault that Bowe ducked him. I would like to see the rematch with Vitali Klitschko but if it doesn't happen, oh well. I think everyone would agree that it was only a matter of time before the Dr. would have been knocked out. And I would bet in the rematch that a focused, in shape Lewis would knock out Vitali even earlier. NO ONE beats that Lewis. Again, a Byrd-LL fight doesn't intrigue me. A Jones-LL fight does, only because I would love to see ole Roy layed out!!!!!

Thats it fight fans!!!!! Signing off from the "GREATEST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD"!!! Keep your hands up and keep punching for the stars!!!!!! 0 comments
