Dariusz Michalczewski goes for 49-0 against Julio Cesar Gonzalez

08.09 - When WBO light heavyweight champion Dariusz Michalczewski, 48-0 (41), reaches out for his 49th consecutive victory he will take on the most dangerous available opponent at 175 pounds: 27-year-old Mexcian Julio Cesar Gonzalez.

Mexican born Californian Gonzalez has a record of 34-1 (22). His sole loss came to the Polish "Tiger's" main rival Roy Jones Junior. Since the Jones points loss, Gonzalez scored seven straight wins, five of them by knockout. He is ranked WBO #2, WBC #2, IBF #3, WBA #3.

Fightnews.com ranks Julio Gonzalez in the top-4 that also include the world champions Antonio Tarver (WBC/IBF) and Medhi Sahnoune (WBA).

Speaking from his training camp the Polish-German said: "I do not want this world record handed to me. I want it to be hard to reach 49-0, and I want the fight itself to be an enormous challenge and Gonzalez is the perfect challenger. I am concerned about him - he is 27 and that's the age many fighters become world champions. But he will have to come through me, I promise I will give everything to reach 49-0."

The explosive contest between the "Tiger" and Gonzalez will take place at the huge Color Line Arena in Hamburg where Michalczewski already defended his title in March against American Derrick Harmon with a 9th round knockout.

Michalczewski is a former undefeated WBO cruiserweight champion and WBA, IBF and linear WBC light heavyweight champion. He made 23 successful defenses of the WBO light heavyweight title that he is holding since September of 1994.

Promoter Klaus-Peter Kohl added: "I am proud of Dariusz for what he has accomplished over the year and prouder still that he wanted a real fight to attempt to reach 49-0. Many advised us against Gonzalez but Dariusz wanted a spectacular fight."
