Boxing’s Baddest: The Fans Speak! (They don’t say too much this week) Issue 6

Mike Samuels

Roy Jones Jr. continues to get brought up by ANYONE who knows boxing (and even those who don’t), and this week is a special ROY JONES RESPONSE! The stubbornness of X has caused a lot of heavyhearted verbal jabs by those who visit us here at Eastsideboxing.com and so now it’s time to lock and load. Time to shed some light on those "boxing aficionado’s" of the world. Read on!

Hey Mike,
Look I’m a huge Roy Jones fan and I think it's time for him to prove to the world that he still has that fire and the talent to fight and BEAT anyone he faces! But my question is since the re-match against Hopkins looks as if it's never going to happen how bout Jones VS. De la Hoya or Jones vs. Vargas or even if a change of weight class I would pay good money to see him move up and fight a holyfield or run all over a bum like Ruiz. I know you probably are not a Roy fan and that I can UNDERSTAND. But lets face it, Roy cant be beat period. He's oozing talent and I think he DOES care about us fans he puts on a great show no matter who he fights no names our not. What do you think about Roy moving up to heavyweight he's done allot of talking in the past but that’s Roy... no matter what anyone says I think Roy’s the BEST boxer in the world who's just bored with his opponents. I don’t even think the great "golden boy" can dethrone the juggernaut that is Roy Jones Jr.

Oh and by the way I think his music SUCKED!!!!!!!!!
Thanks mike

Ya’ll musta’ forgot, knocked Virgil Hill out with a body shot! Sorry, sometimes that song just gets the best of me. You, like most Roy supporters who continue to be with their man like the Tyson fanatics of the world, or the European squad representing boxing, want to see something that will never happen. Roy Jones is NOT going to move up in weight (he’s not going to move anywhere). He is going to sit at 175 and batter Clinton Woods, Tarver, Harding (again), and make five million smackers doing it, without breaking a sweat in the process (if we’re lucky we might be able to see the thrilling Jones vs. Kelly rematch!).

I don’t blame Roy for staying at a comfortable weight. I would NEVER ask him to go to heavyweight because he’s not big enough. He’s faster, has quicker reflexes, and more experience than a lot of the heavies out there, but it’s just not a good idea. It’s asking too much. No one in boxing is asked to move from weight to weight more than Roy Jones, and that’s mainly because he makes the guys at any weight he boxes look like mere jokes. So when you say he’s one of the best in the world on a talent and skill basis, I have to agree. But in order to be great you have to challenge yourself until the end. Roy hasn’t done that. He’s called out everyone time and time again, lied to boxing, lied to himself, and it’s only hurt his stock as a fighter (hence the whole roycott act). Until he fights someone worthy, or makes a sacrifice and cuts a little weight, or gains a little, he will leave that sour taste in everyone’s mouth.

Comparing Jones to De la Hoya or Vargas is just plain bogus, bro. That’s not going to ever happen. De la Hoya at anything more than 154lbs is nothing special, and Vargas at anything more is also a waste of time. To see Roy Jones at anything lower than 160 (and that is SERIOUSLY PUSHING IT) would be down right insane, and I doubt any good would come from boxing. What Roy needs to do is fight someone close to his weight, or a bit heavier, that is in the PRIME of their career. Someone who is ABLE to fight STRONG at his weight (De la Hoya and Vargas wouldn’t). I don’t see it happening now that the Hopkins fight fell through.

Be careful when you say Roy can’t be beat. Everyone can be beaten (and I’m not talking Montell Griffin style either). Tyson was supposed to be invincible, Ali, Frazier, Foreman, Holmes, etc. The list goes on. People get beat. All the greats get beat, but what makes them great is how they come back and please themselves, the sport, and the fans. Jones hasn’t been tested enough to do that. Part of it is his fault, the other half isn’t. When it comes down to it, Jones is fighting in a dead era. Too bad we couldn’t see him at his peak in the eighties. That would have been something.

As far as the music thing goes, well, Jones is putting MORE effort into selling than fighting. I’ll leave it at that.

Mikey,
I think Carlos Monzon's record was tied by Hopkins and not yet beaten. Just curious. Can a NC count as a defense?

All best, partner.

That question was brought up by the HBO team during his destruction of Trinidad. TECHNICALLY it wasn’t broken until he defeated Daniels in February. But as far as what most see it as (including the boxing record books and what not) he broke the record with his win over Tito.

Well, Mike, I guess Eastside is a non-profit organization if they have jokers like you writing for them.

You haven't shown ANY credibility with your subjective opinion of RJ/Hopkins.  You make the same IRRESPONSIBLE claims that all the other fools make regarding Roy Jones' SUPPOSED one-hand domination of Bernard Hopkins.  I have one question for you:  When was the last time you saw a replay of Hopkins/Jones?  Watch it again, sh_thead!  For YEARS Jones has been brainwashing anyone who would listen into thinking that his right hand was hurt and he beat Hopkins with his left...Hell, the wannabe gangsta even raps about it!

The SAD thing is, if you watch the ACTUAL fight, you would notice that the commentators suggest, ON MORE THAN ONE OCCASION, that Jones appears to have hurt his LEFT HAND because HE WASN'T USING the LEFT!

Now, apparently you work/write for Eastsideboxing.com.  If you get paid for that, and you want to keep your job, I suggest you start doing your homework before you go off on these soapbox rants like the article you posted.  If you volunteer to write, then you're nothing more than a blow-hard wannabe boxing journalist, and you STILL need to do your research.

If you wanna quote me, boy, quote that!

Method

It’s not smart to believe everything you hear. And if you’re going to believe something it’s best to do it from the actual source or person. That is why I do not doubt Roy Jones hurt his RIGHT hand in the first Hopkins fight (Mayweather hurt his left against Castillo and he was bombing with it all night). He may have, he may not have. I am not one hundred percent sure, but I’m not here to call the man a liar. I wasn’t in the ring with him that night (were you?). I wasn’t in his corner and I was not able to find out how his training went, or how his hand felt before, during and after his UNANIMOUS DECISION victory over Hopkins (were you?). Try taking your head out of the asses of the commentating team for that fight (they don’t know everything) before you get a sack of balls and try to throw heat my way. I’m just going off the FACTS of the story from Jones himself (something any good boxing journalist would do). I’ve watched the fight COUNTLESS times. I’ve looked at it over and over, analyzed it until I was blue in the face. My homework has been done and I’ve passed the test with flying colors.

The truth is, you’re just a frustrated kid. It’s normal. Your boy Hopkins is running out of steam since he derailed Trinidad almost a year ago. You have nothing to help pump X up (and he’s a damn good fighter regardless of his defeat by Jones), and it hurts to hear the truth about the night Roy Jones made him his beeeooottttccchhh. The SAD thing is, Jones would do it again. Maybe even easier than last time. Now IF the fight ever happens, contact me. I’d love to take some money from you.
