Pickrom vs Montana, Lerma vs Smith Headline Kingfish Fight Card June 16

06.06 - Press Release - Promoters Anna Beth Goodman/Kingfish Boxing Productions and Jim Browning/Browning Boxing will present a sensational fight card on Monday, June 16, 2003, in the Sam Houston Ballroom at the Radisson Hotel Astrodome, located at 8686 Kirby Drive in Houston, Texas.

GREG PICKROM, 19-5-1, 17 KOs, Houston, Texas, vs
SAUL MONTANA, 38-11, 34 KOs, La Paz, Mexico

Greg "Kid Chocolate" Pickrom, 19-5-1, with 17 knockouts, of Houston, Tex., will fight Saul "La Cobra" Montana, 38-11, with 34 knockouts, of La Paz, Mex., in the 12-round heavyweight main event. The WBC Continental Americas title will be at stake.

At the age of 34, Pickrom is on a hot streak - he has won nine fights in a row, eight by knockout, dating back to October, 2001, and has given several impressive performances. Regarding his preparation for this fight, he said, "I've been in camp with Joe Mesi in Buffalo, New York. We've been sparring six, eight rounds a day, three days a week. Everything's good, I will definitely be ready. That's always been my attitude, I'm going to always be ready."

32-year old Montana has a three-fight winning streak, all three by knockout, which includes two TKO wins last year against previously undefeated prospect China Smith. Montana is experienced against top opposition, and has fought current world champion James Toney, former world champions Vassiliy Jirov, Uriah Grant twice, and Virgil Hill.

LORENZO SMITH, 34-4-1, 14 KOs, Chicago, Illinois

In the 10-round co-featured fight at 154 pounds, Michael Lerma, 28-7-1, with 19 knockouts, of Waco, Tex., will face Lorenzo Smith, 34-4-1, with 14 knockouts, of Chicago, Ill.

A professional veteran of over 7 ½ years, Lerma is a warrior who always makes exciting fights - his opponents face constant pressure from the first bell to the last - and has wins against contenders Jason Papillion, Wilfredo Rivera, and J.C. Candelo. Michael currently has a four-fight winning streak.
Smith is a two-time challenger for WBO world titles. A 14-year pro, he is 11-2 in his last 13 fights, which includes a win against Jason Papillion.

An exciting undercard featuring some of Houston's top young boxing talent will be announced.
