Chris Byrd To Attend 2003 Hall Of Fame Weekend

04.06 - Press release - The International Boxing Hall of Fame announced today current IBF heavyweight champion Chris Byrd will attend the 2003 Hall of Fame Induction Weekend scheduled for June 5-8th.

"Chris Byrd is one of the current stars of the heavyweight division," said Hall of Fame director Edward Brophy. "Boxing fans will surely enjoy seeing him in 'Boxing's Hometown.'"

Boxing out of Flint, MI, Byrd is the reigning IBF heavyweight champion. He captured the title with a unanimous 12-round win over Evander Holyfield in December 2002. Prior to his tenure as IBF champ, Byrd held the USBA heavyweight title and also registered a 10th-round TKO over Vitali Klitschko for the WBO belt in 2000. A stylish boxing southpaw, Byrd has scored wins over Bert Cooper, Jimmy Thunder, and David Tua while compiling a 36-2 (20 KOs) record.

The Hall of Fame Weekend will feature over 20 exciting events. Living inductees to be honored include welterweight king Curtis Cokes, 2-time heavyweight champion George Foreman, junior welterweight champion Nicolino Locche, 3-division champion Mike McCallum, journalist Jack Fiske and Academy Award-winning screenwriter Budd Schulberg. Posthumous inductees will also be honored.

Over 50 boxing stars, including Marvelous Marvin Hagler, Emile Griffith, Ken Buchanan, Earnie Shavers, Ken Norton, George Chuvalo, Angelo Dundee, Aaron Pryor, Alexis Arguello, Carmen Basilio, Gene Fullmer, Tony DeMarco, Marlon Starling, Frank Bruno, Donald Curry and Ricardo Lopez are scheduled to participate in weekend festivities.
