George Foreman one of 7 inducted into the World Boxing Hall of Fame

23.10 - On Friday George Foreman was one of 7 inducted into the World Boxing Hall of Fame. The induction ceremonies took place at the new Crowne Plaza and Commerce Casino in Commerce Calif. Also inducted were former Champions Miguel Canto, Mike McCallum and Lupe Pintor, trainer Freddie Roach, HBO commentator Larry Merchant and publicist Bill Caplan.

The star attraction was George Foreman, having been the dominate Heavyweight in the early 1970’s. Born in January of 1949 in Marshall Texas Foreman started boxing in the Job Corps in the 1960’s. By 1968 Foreman won the Olympic Gold for the U.S. and shortly after started his pro carrier in June of 1969. Always a dominant figure in the sport of boxing Foreman won his first title bout in May of 1971 winning the Vacant NABF Heavyweight title. 2 years later "Big George" went on to beat Joe Frazier in Ring magazines 1973 fight of the year to capture the undisputed Heavyweight Championship of the World by knocking Frazier out in the 2nd round. Than in 1987 Foreman stunned the boxing world by coming back after a 10 year retirement to again become a top contender. Foreman again went on to beat the than undefeated Michael Moorer in 1994 to win the World Heavyweight title. Foreman went on to win several more Heavyweight titles before retiring in 1997 after a controversial lose to Shannon Briggs.

George Foreman will long be remembered since his last pro fight. Before becoming the colorful commentator for HBO George made many great contributions to society. The George Foreman Youth and Community Center in Houston, Texas is one of Foremans proudest accomplishments. No one is more deserving to be in the World Boxing Hall of Fame Foremans success goes far beyond the boxing ring.
