GBP Teams Up With Legendary Manager Don Rafael Mendoza

WBC CHAMP OSCAR LARIOS JOINS GBP, GIVES COMPANY ITS FIRST WORLD CHAMPION

LOS ANGELES, April 1 – In little over a year, Golden Boy Promotions has made its presence known as one of the five leading promotional companies in the world of boxing. To further enhance that position, the Los Angeles-based company is pleased to announce that it has formed a strategic relationship with one of the sport’s leading experts and managers, Mexico’s Don Rafael Mendoza.

“I am delighted to team up with Oscar and Golden Boy Promotions,” said Mendoza. “In my over 50 years in boxing I have worked with many of the leading boxing promoters, but I must say that I have not seen for a long time a promoter with the enthusiasm, professionalism, and integrity like Golden Boy Promotions. Oscar De La Hoya’s first hand knowledge of the sport gives him a huge advantage over other promoters. His understanding of the sport and what fighters go through puts him in a unique position to quickly capture a significant share of the global boxing promotion business. I am convinced that he will be a force to be reckoned with for the betterment of the sport.”

A long-time associate of Golden Boy Promotions’ Senior Advisor, Hall of Fame matchmaker Don Chargin, Mr. Mendoza has guided the careers of 16 world champions, including Pipino Cuevas, Humberto “Chiquita” Gonzalez, Chango Carmona, and Daniel Zaragoza. He will work closely with Golden Boy Promotions to bring the best boxing talent Mexico has to offer to fans around the world.

“I am honored to have gained the trust of Don Rafael Mendoza,” said Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya. “I know that together we can do a lot of good for the sport and for the fans, but in particular for the fighters. I always stated that my goal as a promoter is to give young and promising boxing prospects a platform to shine from. Together we will bring boxing fans from all over the world the best Mexico has to offer. Mr. Mendoza’s record speaks for itself. I am convinced that boxing’s next superstar is somewhere out there. Together we will find him and guide his career on the principles of integrity and fairness.”

The relationship has also brought Golden Boy Promotions its first world champion, WBC super bantamweight champion Oscar Larios, who joins WBC #1 ranked lightweight Juan Lazcano, WBC #2 ranked super bantamweight Israel Vazquez, and WBO #2 ranked super lightweight sensation Kelson Pinto, as well as up and coming prospects such as WBC youth lightweight champ ‘Mighty’ Mike Anchondo, NABO super flyweight champion Jose Navarro, WBO #10 ranked bantamweight Carlos Madrigal, WBC youth super middleweight champ Enrique Andrade, and two-time Argentine Olympian Guillermo Saputo, on the Golden Boy Promotions’ team of fighters.

As one of the sport’s most active promoters, Golden Boy Promotions has over 50 shows scheduled this year, with many to be televised on networks such as HBO, Telefutura, and ESPN. And for De La Hoya, this is just the beginning.

“We have barely started and are working on some other exciting projects which will be announced shortly,” said De La Hoya.
