NIGHT OF (FUTURE) CHAMPIONS IN DEN HAAG

DUTCH “LISTON” CLASHES WITH ARGIE “TYSON”

12.05 - An international “cartell” consisting of partners Mourad Louati (Holland), Olaf Schroeder (Fight Production, Germany), Anders Vester (A.V. Sportpromotion, Denmark) and Krzysztof Zbarski (Polish Boxing Promotion) finally announced the programm of the “Night Of The Champions”, to be held in Den Haag next Friday, May 16.

Main attraction, obviously, is homeboy heavyweight Richel Hersisia, 18-0 (14 KO’s), and already holder of the Dutch and WBA Central America titles, gunning for his first “big” crown when he meets the experienced Argentinian Sandro Vazquez for the vacant WBF world championship. Curiously, Vazquez is nicknamed “El Tyson de la Boca” while Hersisia has been called “The Dutch Sonny Liston” by the local Netherlands media. The stocky and powerfully-build Buenos Aires man, a pro since 1988, sports a record of 17-22-3 (10 KO’s), however, since moving up to heavyweight last year he is undefeated in four with three of his wins coming inside the distance. Hersisia, of course, is known to be only satisfied when seeing his man biting the dust, so this match is a sure bet to provide fireworks and end, this way or the other, by one man on the floor.

In the second main event, former world and European title challenger Allan Vester, 23-3-1 (4), risks his IBF Intercontinental lightwelterweight title – and with it his EBU and world rating – when accommodating the challenge of local favourite Akunel Dias. Though possessing only a record of eight wins in 10 fights (Dias had spells of inactivity and one of his losses came at superwelterweight!), the Rotterdam boxer has acquired the Dutch and Benelux titles. He is definitely better than his record suggests, looks forward to his big chance to jump into the limelight and Vester will have his hands full to keep Dias off him.

EBU #3 and WBC #9 superwelterweight, Hungarian star Mihaly Kotai, hopes to keep his undefeated record when meeting Argentinian Oscar Daniel Veliz over 6 rounds. Kotai recently struggled when outpointing Darren Rhodes over 10 to improve his statistics to 22-0 (11) and is currently preparing with his German trainer Theo Kerekesch in Rottweil. Veliz is no mug and Kotai needs to look impressive in order for manager Olaf Schroeder to move him to the next level.

In a female attraction on the card, former beauty contestant and reigning WIBF European bantamweight champion Anita Christensen continues her comeback after being sidelined with injuries for more than a year. The undefeated Christensen is a huge attraction in Denmark and last month looked superb in her first fight back, winning on points. In Den Haag, she is slated to clash with Monique Chipeta from Nairobi, Kenya, who also has never lost as a professional boxer. It shapes up to be a true test for Christensen, who would like to go the world title later this year.

Filling up the international eight-fight card, some attractive matches are scheduled. Ali Souleyman, a gym mate of Hersisia, will hope that weight advantage can even out the greater talent of Danish prospect Fawaz Nasir. Nasir, 4-0 (2), just moved from superwelter to middleweight for his last two wins and will now accept supermiddleweight Souleyman, originally from Ghana. The Dane with Kuwaiti roots is still in demand as a male model and a loss here would be disastrous for him.

Another Dane, lightwelterweight Jan Jensen, will attempt to return after suffering his first professional loss last time out last year. In front on points, he was brutally laid out in the eighth and final round by Fabian Walter Saporiti and now faces Patrik Prokopecz, who in his last bout drew with Sören Engelbrecht to inflict the first black spot on Jensen’s compatriots record.

Warsaw cruiserweight Wlodek Kopec, so far a stoppage winner in all his three pro fights, will face his first test when taking on local debutant Coban Urgul, while in a clash of undefeated prospects one will have to give when middleweight Szabo Rimo and Ferenc Gurmai meet.
