Mihaly Kotai Again Wins In Las Vegas

03.02 - Undefeated Hungarian superwelterweight Mihaly Kotai, rated # 4 by the EBU and # 10 by the World Boxing Council, last weekend improved his record to 21-0 (11 KO’s) with a shutout eight-round decision over Brad “Bad to the Bone” Jensen of Colorado. All three judges scored the bout 80:72, which took place at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino, promoted by TopRank. That was also the site of Kotai’s previous outing last November. Kotai had Jensen in dire straights more than once with his thunderous left hooks, but declined to finish him off and instead choose to completely outbox his taller rival. For his next fight, though, Kotai, the WBC International champion at 154 lbs, will return to Europe.

VESTER STAYS WITH HERSISIA

Danish promoter Anders Vester, of A.V. Sportpromotion, informed Fight Production as manager of hot 16-0 (13) Dutch heavyweight Richel Hersisia that despite his current television problems he intends to keep on promoting the puncher that he turned into a well-known face in Denmark. “We had a clause in the promotional agreement that allowed me to terminate the contract after the first year, but as I am extremly positive that very soon I will jump back into the promotional business, I have notified Olaf (Schroeder), who is also my matchmaker, that he can count on me delivering the fights as planned,” explained Vester.

FINALLY A TITLE SHOT FOR EVERGREEN KONECNY

If patience is all that is needed, Czech veteran Milan Konecny would be in the Hall of Fame a long time ago. Turning pro in 1993 and fighting mostly on the road, Konecny nevertheless combined a record of 21-11-1 (11) and collected three national titles in two different weight divisions. However, he had to wait until 43 years of age before being granted a first shot at an international title. Manager Olaf Schroeder, who likes to joke that the man whose son Lukas is collecting pro titles in Germany is immune against retirement, confirmed that he has agreed for his long-serving boxer to oppose Ismael Abdoul of Belgium on May 10 in Gent with the vacant IBO Intercontinental cruiserweight title on the line.
